Jakee's 4.0 SOHC Build up discussion and motivation thread

just thought it was interesting to see so many different opinions...

My way of thinking is simple...Almost everyone that is deep in this sport has headers. Anyone looking for the MOST from there engine has headers. that being said...

It's very hard to think what the heck is going on turning that many RPM'S. So many variables that the only real way to find out is to try it out for yourself. I plan to do this but I'm going to use a smaller primary pipe than most JBA'S and such. JBA'S have a 1.625 size pipe and the Gibson header has a 1.5" pipe. I'll try these out.

I do feel that this is the ticket for the future and the goals that I currently have.

Post #453:

I don't see how this relates to dyno numbers

It was not the case for me.

I've had traction problems from the beginning but it really depended on the road I was on. On a slick road, I could burn the tires off. On rough concrete I could only chirp (AT THE BEGINNING) NOW, doesn't matter where I'm at I can burn them off from a dead stop not power braking. That alone tells me something. I have power down low. In fact, after the E-FAN install I didn't know the truck very well. Just for grins, I pressed the gas all the way down from a dead stop and before I knew it I was redlining. It scared me cuss I thought I might have damaged something. However, everything is good but I learned about the truck and what to NOT do or at least get ready to lose traction completely if I floor it.

Makes me feel like I'm on the right track but I have a lot more to do. Can't wait to be done with this.

I reccomend the limited slip diff, as I love my auburn pro series limited slip, but I'll add it would be best to regear it at the same time if you ever plan to do it.

thinking bout 4:10 gears.

Little update here...

Last week, I ordered; New body bushings (Urathane), Camber adjusters, and Hawk brake pads. I've been putting these off for WAY to long because of the speed adiction.

Body bushings were ordered because the old ones were falling apart.

Camber adjusters cuss the X is lowered an inch and a half and need camber corrections.

Brake pads cuss it's time.

Okay - The body mounts have been discontinued. Great...

So I went ahead and ordered the Cat convertor. Magnaflow part number 94056. Sensor will go in the middle sort of like stock.

Okay - I've decided to go back to College. I start next Monday. So;

I need to get this crap done!!!! I'm going to order the Alt Pulley, Water pump pulley, and belt used for all the pulleys today. Next week I'll order the Crank Pulley. Get all these mods installed and I'll be ready for the coil and dyno. Getting close!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you going to school?

Why not the crank pulley first?

Why not the crank pulley first?

the 'online' university of phoenix! It's a little expensive but it fits my schedule just right.

I will not install any of the pulleys until the crank comes in next week. It was all I could swing this go around. I need to get this crap done pretty quick or I'll be overwhelmed with school, full time job, and family life.

Good to see some updates. I just had another cat cut off yesterday (leaving me with one total and I plan to keep it). Much more noticeable growl and just a "powerful sound" says my roommate with an SS Camaro. Hoping to get some JBA headers come Xmas time, so we'll see how she sounds then. For stopping, I got my drilled/slotted rotors, and I ordered my EBC Green Stuff pads on Friday morning through work. Stainless lines and Redline brake fluid and the front end will be better than new; I'm also replacing the bearings, control arms, ball joints, etc. Should be handling and sound great after Xmas.

There's always something when you're planning...

If you use a M90 supercharger you can't use the underdrive crank pulley. I thought I could get away with this by finding a smaller pulley on the charger but it looks like there is none. Not sure about this anymore.. Oh well, I'll figure all this out later when I'm done..

would an m62 be out of the question for the SOHC? Explorer Express uses an m62 in their setup 4.0 setup...

Actually you are right. It might have been me that accidently got people referring to the Eaton supercharger offered for the 4.0 Explorer's as the M90 (oops). It is the M62, I just forget to call it that. Good catch.

Yes - The M62 is an options and is used on the EE kit.

The M90 is used on a kit that can be had from a guy named Ron Caster in the RangerPowerSports Forum. The M90 is a bigger version and would be the way to go for a cheaper version of the EE kit.

From all my research, I believe a turbo is the way to go.

I find it really hard to believe that guy is putting down 248 hp n/a with an OHV. I'm calling bs until he posts dyno charts

He's OHV. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt however it's very hard to believe. Let me know if he posts a chart.

I don't care to beat anyone if it turns into a death match, with people getting there feelings hurt, and taking stabs at me for the rest of their life.

Friendly compitition is welcome.

I've got all the parts I ordered in the last couple of weeks. Just sitting there waiting.....Need the crank pulley and a coil.

I see that fella's post as a tall tale as well. He has a decent amount of bolt ons but that truck started at 160 hp at the crank and now he is claiming close to 250 at the wheels??? Yeah total BBBBBBBSSSSSSS. That would be a total gain of close to 140 horsepower from those mods if his 248 hp was measured on a chassis dyno and not an engine dyno. Even if it were on an engine dyno that is still hogwash.

As usual, I agree +1 with Rocket!UHHHHH BS!
