Jakee's 4.0 SOHC Build up discussion and motivation thread

Jakee, whats next?

I still need the crank pulley before I can do any of the pulleys

All the parts I've been ordering are just sitting here for now.

I had to order an O2 bung plug for my existing bung. I'll cap her off and add the hi-flow converter (The converter has a bung located in the middle). Once I go to the next level, I can remove the cap and use the bung for a wideband.

Lets see...I had the front rotors turned and need to install. At the same time I'll do the camber adjusters. I'll then do the rear brakes, and finally take it to the alignment shop. I was going to do power slots this go around but think I'll wait till next time.

In the mean time, I'm going to have my intake powder coated. I also ordered some weather-strip to seal the thing properly against the fender. Just going back and fixing all the little imperfections I find.

So, after all these steps are done (Just have to get off my butt and do them) I'll order the coil and do the first dyno. Still aiming for the end of FEB but might be before.

Should have the crank pulley by the end of this week. I'm trying to talk my wife into buying the coil for my birthday present.

I've decided to go with the SCT livewire for my tuning. I'll pick this up from James in the next couple of weeks. I'll send him my datalog info and he'll fix me up with the a good tune. I'll then dyno locally OR drive up to where Alababma and dyno there somewhere. It all depends on what James suggests.

Do you plan to do alot of datalogging? I mean ALOT??? If you don't plan to then I suggest against the Livewire as it is just an Xcal2 with fancy onscreen logging capabilities for pretty much twice as much as an Xcal2. The tunes are exactly the same. Xcal2= $350,...Livewire= $600....You do the math. :D

I concur completely.

I thought it was 400$. Yeah, I can't see paying 600$ for this. I'll look into it.

The only datalogging I'll do is to send to James to get everything working good.

My other option is to have the thing tuned on a dyno where a custom chip is burned. Only down fall here is a really want to learn how to tune and I've already said who the tuner would be.

I need someone to guide me in the right direction here so I don't make any mistakes. As you know the N/A goal is just the start. If I can learn as much as possible about tuning right now then when the other projects come to life I'll know what to look for and try to tune myself.

You can still datalog with the Xcal2. The datalogging function is just not as fancy looking as the Livewire's is. The Xcal2 and Livewire do the same things when it comes to logging and tunes. The only benefit the Livewire has is that it incorporates one of those G-tech wannabe performance meters. Fine and dandy and all but I personally think those performance meters are garbage.

Learning how to tune vehicles correctly is not an easy process. It will take alot of time to first understand how all the engine systems interact first, and then start learning how to tune and all the in betweens. The only way you will actually learn how to tune is if you buy the SCT PRP with either the handbook or tuning videos and while being very careful, do it yourself.

Jake, IMO I suspect your not ready for that yet. I reccomend that you stick with James and just have him tune your truck this time around.

Once again, Rocket's wisdome shines through.

No, I don't want to tune it as of now. I want James to tune the thing and maybe learn as much from him as possible. I agree, I have a lot to learn before I go poking around with the tuning.

I still have a couple more things to do before the tune so I'll be thinking about it, and what I need to accomplish my goals. I agree, a 600$ livewire would not get me the goal, just thought it was cheaper for some reason.

Thanks for the help guys.

Once again, Rocket's wisdome shines through.

Rocket is a good-solid-all-around-experienced guy. I like him. Just needs to quit peeing on his wifes leg.

Once again, Rocket's wisdome shines through.

Except for the peeing on the wifes leg part--it no longer achieves the desired effect.:D

You know what I hate...Just sitting here waiting for the cash to come in for the next mod.

I blame that for anything stupid I type in here. It's cuss I'm bored...

Thats what they make credit for .... :)

I'm a little different than your average american. I don't believe in charging things to much. I try to stay away from that.

I really didn't have any luck finding a good powder coater near me so I decided to try my luck with regular painting. I did prep work for almost 3 days to ensure the intake would come out flawless and the paint would stick! I wound up baking the paint on and it turned out pretty dang good. I'll post some pics either tonight or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow cuss I still have a few clear coats to add. I can say this, the paint is on there and I don't think it's coming off! That's the good thing about "baking" paint on. The bad thing is finding the right temp. A temp that won't cause bubbles but it hot enough to open the pores in the metal to allow the paint to enter pores. Once the metal cools it locks the paint in where it won't come off to easy.

Maybe the wife likes it? ;) :p:

No, she would probably kick my ass if I did that to her. :D

My intake paint job went south. I painted the final coat when it was a little to cold and the paint fogged. But, being the genius I am, I fixed it with some flakes and clear. I'll let it dry for a few days and put it back on after I install the pulleys.

I miss the X cuss I haven't drove the thing in atleast a month now. I'm ready to get the pulleys on, the cat installed, and see where I'm at.

I'm in the process of making plans to visit James in Alabama. I'll be going up there shortly to get the tune. James is looking into booking a dyno session up there somewhere. I'll give you the info once I find out. Look forward to getting this crap done!

Okay, so the crank pulley is finally ordered. Probably have it by Monday next week.

I think I've thought so hard about what needs to be done that I've burned myself out. I've done more thinking than doing and it's starting to get to me. I need a 6-pack and chill. School, job, kids, wife, stupid drivers, bills......HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel better now.

LiveWire & Tuning

The LiveWire MSRP is $679.00 and the MAP is $569.00. So I would expect to see the pricing range from $569.00-$589.00. Even if Jake decides to buy the LiveWire from me while tuning I will datalog through the Excal2. I sell the ExCal2 for $389.00. I am ready when Jake is. Jake and I already talked about tuning and he
has decided where that will be done as well as the dyno location has already been chosen. Can't wait!!!!!Cheers-James:chug:
