You found Jeep or Ford?

I guess it may be Jeep, since that is what you are asking about. Do a google search for mr n. His page talks all about the Dana 44 and whats interchangable. If I were you I would stick with one bolt pattern all around otherwise you would need 2 spare wheels/tires. If you are looking for a cheap conversion in the rear, just order a set of wheel adapters from spidertrax or another vendor.

Its a link to a Jeep Wagoneer D44.
Thanks for the info.

I found a Wagoneer that is local. Its the whole thing for sale for $600 and the engine is running and everything. Supposedly the only problem is it has an exhaust leak I think. I sent the guy an email to see if hed be interested in parting it out and letting me take just the front suspension but havent received an email back from him yet. The only problem with getting the whole Wagoneer is I dont know what to do with the rest of it once I get the axles out. Maybe use the engine, tranny and tcase for something else

Update on the whole Wagoneer for sale---- he said hed take $500 for it, but wont part it out. Thats a good deal IMO especially since it would have all of the suspension and steering with the axle instead of JUST the axle that you buy from most people. Also, it is still a running/driveable vehicle, so I would have an engine and everything for something else. Dont really need it but dont think anyone would buy a Wagoneer without the front suspension lol

So, I think this is the route im going to go, a Wagoneer D44. The only thing that im thinking about is I found a 79 Bronco frame with all of the suspension, steering, axles, tires, wheels and everything for $300.

84 Wagoneer axle

Hey yall, wasnt sure where to post this, but I found a Jeep Grand Wagoneer axle at my local salvage yard, Wrights Salvage, for $300. It is complete and also will come with the leaf springs.
First off, did all the Grand Waggys have D44s? I didnt even think to make sure it was a D44. I was in a rush because I needed to get to work.
Also, it had the vaccum 4x4. What do I need and how hard would it be to make it manual locking? I guess I have to do that because I dont think it would just "plug" up to the Explorers vaccum system would it?

Also, does $300 sound fair with the leaf springs and it being complete? Sounds pretty high to me but its the only one I can find (except for a whole running 84 Waggy for $500).

Thanks
Travis

Why does it do that? I went to the button that says "start new thread" or whatever it says.

Oh, so thats how the first one got messed up too? Id posted a thread in the wanted section, then I was trying to post a thread somewhere else for all the questions I had. So now theres this long thread of questions in the wanted section.
That is why I just tried to make another post in a more appropriate place, because im in the wanted section now and am not getting many responses im guessing because of where the thread is at.

Oh well, maybe some people will see it.

Ok, I found a Early Bronco D44. I have 2 to choose from but the one that is complete is $250.
The only problem with this is I was looking at gears for the D44, it looks like im going to have a hard time matching gears front and rear in the lower gears. I wanted to run somewhere around 4.88 gears, but the D44 says 4.89 and not even sure if the 8.8 can hold 4.88 gears?

Also, can I use fullsize D44 from a 79 F150 parts to make the EB D44 have disc brakes?

Which axle?

Seem's to be the question of the day for alot of folks on here. Just my .02 about the D30. From an xj or tj (cherokee or 97+ wrangler) it will be coil sprung. from a yj (88-94 wrangler) it will be leaf sprung. If it is factory. I am currently in the R&D phase of doing a sas to my 2wd explorer. So I have alot more crap to deal with, but I got the exploder for a song and it is 5spd and the 4.0 runs excellent. So it will be a DD/moderate trail/hunting camping rig.

I have owned 2 YJ's and both of them I locked. the first one I was running a ford 9" from a 63 Galaxy, 4:88's & a detroit locker. The front was the stock jeep D30. It was locked with a lock right locker and 4:88's. I abused the heck out of it with 33's. finally I busted the ujoint between the outer and inner and when it tweeked it busted the knuckle pin. However, with chrome moly's I do believe I would have been quite fine on 35's if I was carefull.

My opinion, and a true blue oval guy at heart, a full width HP D44 from a bronco and the 9" from a truck or bronco is the best way to go. the weight of the explorer will do nicely under those axles. Also, with chrome molly's, ya!

Although another set axle's that I am considering are some 86-87 Grand Wagoneer axles. D44'S front and rear. Leaf sprung. Width is about right.

Hope I helped confuse you a little more.

Good Luck,

Danny.:salute:

U need to use 76 or 77 F150 Dana 44, Full width front, wedges are weld on and this will allow u to move coil spring mounts in and get could alignment with your coils to the frame and coil towers, cause spaceing towers out which causes more un needed stress to frame, this is your best bet, then fullwitdh 9in or 8.8 in the rear.
78-79 F150 will work but not as well if doing fullwitdh.

huh?

I'm no expert here (so I should just probably shut up now)

BUT I know there is plenty of guys running dana30s from jeeps, it's an easier swap, you can basically transform your truck to the front suspension of a jeep. (search notajp, and anybody else in the SAS registry, that is all completed swaps)

If you are really savvy, you can weld up the mounts of a 4 link to a dana 44 (search Jefe dana 44)

or you can swap the early bronco style front axle dana 44 with it's arms etc (like froader, my old 94 limited, stico and several other members)
or go leafs (search rockranger, yomie)

The older jeeps cjs DID have lockouts, but they were possibly a different lug pattern and typically leaf sprung.

Here is what you need to decide and we'll tell you what to look for

full width or stock width?

Dana 30, 44 or 60

what rear setup do you want to match?

coils, leafs, coilovers or airshocks?

you will typically end up with either a front axle with 5x4.5 or 5x5.5, some guys like to change the whole rear axle out, some swear by the 8.8 (like me). Some dana 44s come with 6 lug from a wagoneer, and guys put 5x5.5 knuckles on them.

some guys change rear shafts to match bolt pattern

some guys add rear adapters to convert lug pattern to match

some guys move the front axle forward further

also decide your gears and lockers now and work that into the budget, most likely your new axle will be ready for a full rebuild (unless it's like that jeep axle, a '97 wouldn't be in bad shape, but gear ratio might be wrong)

Also if I'm not mistaken arent the Grand wagoneers a passengers side drop? I dont think anyone's mentioned which side drop these axles have been.
