Jimbo74's 96 X

I just bought most of the Amsoil products that I needed to start with. The trans fluid can be had in many ways, I like the 12 for $79 basic bottle version. That 2.5 gallon container amounts to $65, the good prices.

do we have dealers here? that can offer a substansial discount? i am not against using syns, i jsut dont have the $ for it....

i bought a gallon of oem coolants today for my friends toyota... $24!

UPDATE:

bought the m12x1.75 x100mm bolts for my TT

bought bolts for the center of the spring pcak for the AALs

got some work done...

ran seafoam through brake booster
ran b12 chemtool through the gas tank
changed the dpfe sensor and the hoses for it
changed the spark plugs
put on the magnecors
changed the oil: castrol gtx 20w-50, ford fl1a filter
reaimed my headlights-aimed them up just a hair
topped of my coolant, both washer reservoirs, and power steering fluid (needs a little brake fluid, but i cant find any)

battery is currently disconnected with headlights left on to kill any residual power in the system, i will go and start it up in a few minutes, then top off the oil level (its got a hair over 5 quarts now, and the filter was pre-filled)

tomorrows project will most likely be the tranny pan drop, and the solenoid and bracket, plus topping off the tcase

if i have time, will install the alignment eccentrics and the AAL, the TT will have to wait until another time

EDIT:
oh yeah, and for the spark plugs, everyone always says #3 is a pita... my 1-3 were actually the easy ones..... on 1-3, i removed my intake tube, i tried the wheelwell thing and wasnt having any luck... with the intake tube removed, i could get my whole left arm in there

used a swivel spark plug socket, sometimes a 3" extension, and my 3/8" snap on ratchet, its body size is the same as a 1/4" drive, but its got a 3/8"

ANOTHER EDIT:
got it started, seems to run ok, it is smoother, but still seems to have a misfire... hmmm... it might just be fords off idle lope that they all seem to have....
will be testing for the CELs hopefully I nixed them!

ok, i have a green epc... meaning: 4r44e

pan, filter, mercon, updated epc bracket, and new ssc

topped off the tcase, it took over a quart!!!!

as i was under there, i was bored.... so i looked @ the tbar bolts, on the stocks i had 3/4" left, so i cranked them both to bottom out-looked level initially, but will recheck later-if it looks good, i might not lift it anymore and jsut leave it alone

still to do: aal and alignment eccentrics

I added too much atf. it is past the hatched area. it oes up the dipstick and goes to the D in the word add.

"DON'T ADD IF IN CROSS-HATCHED AREA"

can i leave it alone? or is it critical to go buy a siphon pump and suck some out?

UPDATE EDIT:
ok, just drove to Safeway, feel a little better about where it is at.... I am probably just going to leave it alone

It is now @ about the '

"DON'T ADD IF IN CROSS-HATCHED AREA"

on an unrelated note, my pass side sits a little higher than the driver's, i might crank the pass side down a little or do my 100mm TT bolts afterall....

Pull a cooler line off and drain a cup or so out. Check the front level from the ground to the front control arm bolts, next to the torsion bar. You need an alignment now, the tires will wear badly until then.

Did you replace the EPC valve, is that green color the first version on 4R44E's?

i didnt change the epc, i jsut removed it to see which color it was, from sources on here, i have not been able to determine if i had a 4r44e or a 4r55e... some people say its a 4r44 some say its a 4r55.... having the green epc should dictate i have a 4r44e, however between sources it still sounds inconclusive. the truck is a 96 with the 4.0l OHV and a control-trac 4405

as for the fluid level, it has gone down a little bit more, i think i am just going to leave it, from a few sources on here, they said a little excess will not harm the tranny, but it will just piss it out the breather when it gets hot

Only I tiny amount over the top line is okay, any more than that and the fluid froths and you end up with air in it and poor gear holding, like being low on fluid. Regards,

ita actually to the ' in "DON'T ADD IF IN THE CROSS-HATCHED AREA"

That's close, how far is that, about 1/4" or what? I just received four gallons of Amsoil ATF, it looks like Koolaid.

not sure how clsoe it is, jsut remembered that was where it was at... i htink i am jsut going to leave it alone....

on another note, my tcase was over a qt low..... that cant be good, i think the rear seal of the tcase is leaking..... ill get it rebuilt one day.... need to figure out why it wotn shift on the fly, it will shift into 4x4 @ a stop, but wont shift in while moving.....

You can change that rear seal by dropping the rear shaft to get to it. Buy a Ford seal because those will have a large dust boot that cheaper seals don't have. Time to eat,

hmmm that actually doesnt sound too bad now.... hopefully that is it... the whole tcase is covered in atf.... and it goes high up. its clean, so i dont think its all jsut splashing around... most liekly is the output.... may need to change it, after i do some other things.....

oh yeah, so i drove 90 miles on sunday, P0420 popped up! ugh... says bad cat due to downstream o2..... didnt have the code on the return trip though..... bit worried now but not too much, it seems to run great at this point....

P0420 popped again last night... ugh... jsut what I needed... something gets fixed, something else goes wrong.....

logged over 200 miles of driving this weekend. varied conditions, no CEL

did have a small scare though, and something I need to fix now. Decided I wanted to use my lumbar support, ok... I go to use it, the battery guage on the dash starts jumping all over the place, and all of a sudden.. smoke.... and lots of it...... the switches no longer work for anything, they were working up until the smoke... great.....

EDIT 10/31/07:
on the way to work last night, cel 0420 came on again*

EDIT 11/01/07:
on the way to work last night, cel 0420 came on again*

*work is 40 miles round trip, seems to come on in exactly the same place, freeway offramp 2-3 miles from work; does not come on on the trip home, time of CEL is about the same as well, about 3:20 AM, near OAK Metro Airport

EDIT 11/02/07:
No CEL last night, 40 miles logged, as well as an additional 20 miles of city driving today

EDIT 11/03/07:
cel came on again today, at the end of my 40 mile trip home from work, a block down the street from my house, P0420

next project, well after general maintenance, is (3) 94 saw rims, with steel spare from 96, with 31" bfgs, torsion twist with 100mm bolts, AAL and alignment eccentrics

What is the 0420 again, with what you have done it should be easier to figure out?

p0420 is supposed to be a bad cat because the o2 sensor has a cat ineffieciency reading

as of today [11/06/07], another 200 miles on it, and no cel

UPDATE EDIT 11/07/08:
40 miles, no CEL

UPDATE EDIT 11/08/07:
so.... upon startup this morning (and still parked!) my CEL was on.... p0420... i reset it and proceeded to drive my 40 miles roundtrip to work, it hasnt come back on.

i think it may be related to having low amount of gas. i routinely drive around for a day at a time with the check gage light because i am poor so i dont put gas in until it absolutely need it, it may be a trend and i will pay more attention to that now if it might have anything to do with when my cel triggers

mounted up some 31s today... bfg all terrains, 3 are ko on my 94 saw rims, on is a regular on the [15x6 i think] steel spare rim

i dont have another extra alloy, so the 15x6 will be clsoe enough and run on the front for now, i have an alignment issue, so that one will get beat the most right now...

my 235s are pretty much bald now, 1 is new though
