Jon And Sheri's Vitamin D Wagon

So does it still not run right even in park? If so I'd wonder hard about the plug wires then, that they may be crossed or just bad. Pull one from the driver's side and see if the engine runs differently. It should be worse with any wire pulled, if not the spark isn't getting through. That might be the soot covered plugs.

Another thing
Don posted a link once with good info using a vacuum gauge as a diagnostic tool. Any evidence at this point is good.

You can get an indication of a clogged cat by reading vacuum. Supposedly, as you slowly open the throttle the vacuum should go way down if there is a clog.

Under steady slow opening it goes no lower than 10"
it drops to 4" if it is opened very quickly. This seems normal to me.

Runs great and revs in park. In fact, I am amazed how smooth it does run, and, how fast it fires right up. The issue seems to be under load, in gear. It "feels" like 3 cylinders are going away.

Are there range sensors for the tranny to tell the computer it is in gear? That is what the problem sounds like. You could try to take it and go to WOT. This would force the computer into Open Loop which goes then to a preset fuel map (Please someone chime in if this is wrong as this info is more for the later model ECUs) If it runs right then you have a communication problem somewhere if not then you have ECU issues probably:dunno:

OK, I am going to try jacking the rear axle off the ground for a free wheel test. I want to feel the trans go thru the gears.

Daniel I will also try your suggestion and report back.

There is to a degree, When the transfer case is shifted into 4LO the computer will only let the transmission shift either 1-2 or 2-3 and no overdrive in either case. and this occurs when the shifter is placed in Drive

You guys you guys you guys!!!

I jacked it up and it went thru the gears at idle, and wheel speed was indicated. I shifted it manually, and let it do it's thing.. The shifts are nice and firm, with no delays. Awesome!!!

SO hmm, I put it back down and whatya know--??

I feel like an idiot. Sorry for all this.

I tried again to get it up the drivway while my friend Jimmy watched. At this time I might note the new radius arm bushings I have in the box to replace the worn and gapped ones. He said "your tweaking your front end".

Sure enough, as I stated earlier when I said it felt like the brakes were applied--something up front is hung up. Brakes? I sure feel a difference when applying them though

I need Dana 44 with front disc brake early bronco guru input here.

The hubs are "Pro Comp" and rotate freely from the locked to free position, where they are now.

I might add. The 4x4 lights either do not work, the buttons don't work, or I don't know how to do it correctly. I pushed the 4x4 button and no light ar anything. phoeeuy. It may very well just be a wiring, or fuse issue. Haven't gotten there yet-

Anyway--this now seems not to be an engine issue, rather, it is a driveline issue. This will get me out from under the hood at least. At this point I feel the engine is fine and I was side tracked, while dragging you all down with me. Dayummmm.

on with the program?

No if it's like mine?? remember it had to be stopped in park or nuetral(sp)

Then push 4x4 then you should be good to go. you can push 4x4lo while moving but to engage and disengage 4x4 must be stopped and in N or P!!

That's how we did it at truck haven!!

Yeah, but the light doesn't come on until you move a bit yes?

I think you have the 4 lo and 4x4 mixed up though, 4x4 while moving, 4lo while stopped.

...He does have 4hi and 4lo mixed up...;)

OK this is good stuff. I played with the button a bit because I saw it barely light when I did. Then with the key on only, I got it to light up, and heard the relays clicking. Just stubborn like me I guess.

So I started it and turned on 4x4, then reversed and the light came on. I heard a slight thunk under the truck. I then went out and locked the hubs .Then I shifted to neutral to try 4wlo , pushed the button and a light started flashing, a thunk was heard and 4wlo stayed on!! I then was able to drive thru the brakes with ease.

I turned it off and unlocked the hubs, crawled under and the front drive shaft turns both front axles freely. I think there is a locker in there.

Doing a brake inspection now. I feel like an idiot. really I do. Sorry.

...Don't feel that way...

...I went through all this myself...Not knowing the vehicles history or it's traits made me feel the same way...

...I spent almost a whole day on the forum with help trying to get my X into 4wd the first time...It was being stubborn all on it's own...:D

I don't know why man. You've done a great job fingering things out.

So your saying that with the hubs locked you can push 4x4 button on the move. And stop & P/N TO engage 4lo and disengage.

Is this right??

Better safe then sorry!! I don't want ya having to work on mine either jon!!
At least not NOW!!!LOL:D

Got to do family crap now!:(

...Just my thinking when it comes to brakes...I like new parts FTW...:biggthump
