I'm not sure about the dual exhaust. I know some members have dual exhaust but I don't know if they sell a kit or if it was custom bent. I'm sure someone will be able to answer this question. As for the headers you can't go wrong with torque monster headers. A very worthwhile mod on the 5.0.

If you want it for "soccer mom" use, don't waste the effort with dual exhaust. It will hurt bottom end torque, mileage and performance. Use a good muffler (i.e. Flowmaster) with a dual input and single output, and mandrel bent tail pipe. I believe you will want a 2.5" tailpipe IIRC. I bought the Flowmaster kit for mine...and it's configured like this. I called and asked why they went with single exhaust. They told me that in their dyno tests, it performed the best for the use the vehicle was intended for. I don't believe that kit will fit a 96 though without some flange welding.

IMO
go for these in order-

xcal tuning device from James at www.hensonperformance.com

Torque monster headers ( only option)
Trick flow 1" phenolic spacer
Mac intake
Amsoil fluids in the cases-

you might be interested to know I have a single 3" exhaust. I actually paid them to remove the dual setup I had.
if you have doubts about the single exhaust, I invite you to look at the link in my signature-

well tanks for the input so far sound like some decent power upgrades. afreind of mine has a stock cobra intake in his basement he went with an expensive aftermarket one. and is willing to give it to me does it deliver better performance then the one i have know?

225hp in a 4400lb vehicle is not gonna be fast by any means.
Biggest seat of the pants difference would be gears depending on which ones you have now.

Our 2000 5.0 has plenty of power...we also have a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder and the two are very comparable.

I'd bet on the Ford since the Pathfinder is gutless at higher RPM's.

Snake, how many miles does it have? It's 13 YEARS OLD!!! The 90's are OLD!!!

196002 runs like it new. on another note i was checking craigslist and found a 5.4 from a lincoln with 38k on it can they be cramed in a explorer? the guy wants 500 with all the wiring and computer or just keep looking to upgrade the 5.0?

Your pushrod 5.0L is already crammed into the explorer
the 4.6 and 5.4L = no way in hell
Not without frame mods and steering customization
Seriously its been done, tried

KEEP your 5.0L
do the mods as mentioned in this thread and you will awake the sleeping giant.

I wouldnt trade my GT-40P pushrod 5.0L Cobra full roller engine for any of the new powerplants, not even if you paid me to swap it in! (unless it was a supercharged 5.4L lightning drivetrain, then maybe!) but even then the 5.0L has so much potential, its just time and $$$$$

JT has a 347 in his 98 Mounty, no reason to go with a different block or overhead cam, etc
search around
my 96 on 33's with true 4x4 and a mildy modded 5.0L kicks ass, towing my 19' boat through the rockies or two 900cc long trac snowmobiles, it cannot be stopped and I still have 3.73 gears....

ok sounds like the 5.0 is a good engine my 5.0 in my 92 ta yrs back was a dog and every chevy guy said it to, i havent heard a ford guy yet say there 5.0 is bad . does summit have the headers i need?

No not on Summit I dont think

Torque Monster Headers
do a search

any one know were to get them?

the chevy 5.0 305 isnt that big of a dog, i had the stock vin G 305 in my 84 monte carlo SS with 54K original miles and was pleased with its stock performance.

the ford 5.0 302 has tons and tons of aftermarket support. there is virtually no end to the mods you can do to this motor. @ stock with 160K miles my 97 5.0 is still fun to drive.

i pulled my 305 from my ta and put in a 539 rwh 400sbc the 305 was pathetic the ford 5.0 has more aftermarket parts it seems and i think i will be very pleased soon

afreind of mine has a stock cobra intake in his basement he went with an expensive aftermarket one. and is willing to give it to me does it deliver better performance then the one i have know?

That is basically the same manifold you have stock from the factory. Folks call it a GT-40. It's not. Well, the base is. But the upper on a GT-40 is nothing close to the Cobra or Explorer manifold. GT-40 is more of a top end manifold and is getting rare to find these days since I don't believe they are being produced any longer.

Agreed with Cobraguy- when we buy junked Explorer P-motors and put them in our Mustangs, way more often than not the Explorer intake stays on them. I think 2 of us put on Cobra intakes out of about 20 cars. One was used and cheap, the other was ported. Not worth spending the extra money to replace it, the Explorer intake flows just fine.

i got a call a couple weeks ago from a friend helping his brother build his 5.0 foxbody asking if i knew anyone that had some 5.0 explorer mainfolds and heads laying around. the day before he made fun of me for making such a 'huge mistake' in keeping the truck after someone offered to buy it from me. oh well.
