Just snowed and no 4x4.

Hi everybody. It just snowed a few inches on top of rain and I'm really missing haveing 4 wheel drive. I plan on a manual case swap but for now it'snot in the budget. My problem is that the fuses are all ok, and when you push the 4 hi button I get nothing at all no clicking no light nothing, Switch maybe. What wires do you jump on the harness to bypass the switch? Are there any Reset buttons on the 4x4 computer? Or any fuses located behind the drivers rear panel? I'm getting around fine right now but If I have to leave town I'm gonna want it working. thanks

Thanks for the info Blee, alot of it was very useful but most left unanswered questions, like why would there be no noises whatsoever from anything, and what wires should I jump to see if it's just the switch that is bad? My Ex has 195,000 miles on it so I would guess It's more meets the eye.

it is most likely the shift motor itself, not the wiring or switches.

Also could be a bad hub up front.

Solutions:
Convert to manual hubs
Clean shift motor

You can search for these, they are covered in great detail here.
You will want to use your 4x4 every few months to keep it lubricated and make sure it is working.

If the shift motor is fried or in need of a good cleaning, you may not hear anything at all. The shift motor has been a constant problem with the Explorers. If it's not used regularly, the motor brushes and/or armature get glazed or corroded and the motor won't work.

Since you're not getting any lights on the dash, the hubs won't be the problem. Shift motor is the most likely candidate.

FYI I have "rebuilt" 8 or 9 shift motors myself to date.
ON every truck the shift motor was the cause of no 4x4
All of them still work to this day as far as I know.

it cost $0 and takes me about an hour total to do the job.
