Kenne Bell Explorer Phase 2 build begins!!!

One question, what made you want to stay with the 4.6 instead of a lbigger engine, since you are pretty much changing everything stock anyways? I like the project alot, just what to know what the reasoning is for staying 4.6 instead of pulling it and dropping in a big block.

Wait to you see this guys dyno. You don't need a big block with the numbers he'll be pulling. Plus the weight/HP ratio. Plus he won't have to spend a lot of time cutting here and there trying to make it fit.

Why ask why?

Why swap to another whole engine system when the engine system currently used in my X was good enough. Of course I needed to swap the stock shortblock and all that out, but a built 4.6 SOHC can support a TON of horsepower. With a blown bigblock I could have topped 1,000+ at the wheels no problem. I didn't want to go that extreme right away. Making 600 rwhp this season and close to 700 at the tires next season will be fine with me. As long as I am in the low 11's to high 10's I will be happy. If I want more power I will just throw a big single turbo on there to make 1,000+ at the rears and weld in a cage as well. Everything except for the supercharger will withstand 1,000+ anyways. The supercharger is only capable of making about 800-850.

so when you get his thing done, i want to race you. But, you have to be in reverse and give me 15 lengths. What do you say?

Now that I am not super busy with other stuff for the next two weeks I should be able to knock a lot of it out soon if things go well.

I got the Art Carr 4R70W in not too long ago and the rest of my fuel system will arrive tomorrow. I decided to make things easier and take the few additional steps to allow me room to grow with the fuel system, so I switched from returnless to return. Not much of a big reconfiguration being that I was running dual -8AN lines from tank to front anyways, just have to add in the FPR up front with the crossover and then run the -6AN return line to the tank again. Wire the Ford GT pumps for return configuration up to a relay activated by 12V ignition source and I am good to go. Of course I will need to change a lot in my tune now though. Eliminate fuel pressure trims and eliminate auto tranny function along with the normal retuning for a project like this such as MAS trans modding, injector values, spark timing, so on...

If things go well I should accomplish a lot here soon. I still don't expect to be driving it for another month or so, but who knows. What is really going to suck will be taking it easy on the engine during the 1,000 mile breakin process. I will most likely keep the boost bypass locked open for the first 500 miles so it will be stressed less.

If you're anything like me you might want to rig up a govenor. ;)

Whoa rocket, didnt know all this was going on. Thats a pretty sick engine/tranny combo you have going. One question though, the d-shaft you will b using, what is it from? Or is it a custom made shaft for your trucks weight and torque/hp.

I have a pretty good amount of self control. The boost bypass and the knowledge that the better I break it in right, the more I will be able to beat on it in the future is motivation enough.

Custom driveshaft. I haven't checked the splines to see if my stocker one will mate to the 4R but my guess is no. Driveshafts rarely need upgrading to be able to handle more power. Usually people only go to lighter aluminum ones to save sprung weight as well as rotational weight too. They usually dampen vibration a little better also. If I can get my stocker shaft cut to size then that is what I will do. If I have to change the spline then I will just go full custom. Either way it is only a few 100 bucks at most.

Who's going to tune it?

I tune my Explorer and I tuned my LS for the nitrous.

You and Troll really need to get together for a race after you finish this thing....I like your mindset....go big or go home!

Troll better run his nitrous if he wants to win. :D

The go big or go home is pretty much my mindset. I also don't like to buy things twice, so when I upgrade something I get something capable of handling not only my current needs but future needs as well. That is why the engine, tranny, and fuel system are built to withstand 1,000+ hp.

Rocket, I have not been part of the forums for a while as I have started my own custom tuning business. So I have been very busy with business startup. I would like to say good luck as I have been here many of times with previous Mustangs that I have owned ( the fondest memories was my '95 twin turbo 5.0L). If someone has never truly been here then they will never understand the blood, sweat and tears involved with a project like this! Hats off to you and good luck, I will follow this project and wait a minute....Can I.......Smell 10's? You go for it!

Ditto, go go go.

Thanks man. Yes, as some know in here, it does take a lot to do a project like this. Unlike musclecar owners who can just bolt a mod on their car because it is made for it; there is designing and fabrication involved in a custom project like this. Then usually there is redesigning and refabrication involved. hehe. It is a PITA but it will be worth it in the end. I love my car projects but I will be glad when I can take a break from mine and concentrate on others projects. I am aching to do another custom blower project. I have enough Mustang buddies that I am sure one of them will be wanting a blower here soon. At least then I can get away from this one for a day or two and have my fun on someone elses car.

95 TT 5.0... I would have liked to see that! Must have been pushing at least 700 to the wheels or so hey? I know a local dude pushing past 1k at the wheels with a TT 347 in his 95 Stang. Whatever happened to it? Sell it or crash it?

Yes you do smell 10's. Though it will not be this year, 10's will be right around the corner. As for now I will be content with 11's for this year. If I can get traction then mid 11's should be possible.

Just like the other 6 'Stangs I owned. Sold it! Also I can understand about fabbing and then refabbing and oh **** more refabbing. I have a turboed Ex so I feel your pain, just when you think your done well, your not.

Rocket - You've inspired me a great deal with you're projects. Keep up the good work and thanks for the advice you've given me.

As much as I hate to admit it, If you want to make killer horsepower then you have to go turbo. Not to degrade superchargers, but they have thier place and in the hp wars it isn't there.

Yep. Superchargers have their place,.....just not anywhere above 1,000 horsepower on a normal basis. That is strictly turbo territory for the most part.

Superchargers really shine on the street, or in otherwise shorter races and daily driveability. Turbo's, no matter how little the lag, always pose slight power delay problems which in some instances can lead to bad things. This blower I an running now will top out at a little above 800hp. That will hold me over till later on.
