Hello!

I have an 06 Eddie Bauer - 103,000 miler!

Anyone getting a loud banging noise from the drivetrain when shifting into reverse???...... particularly on a cold start - but could occurr warm or cold.

This catches me off guard sometimes.....

When starting cold, I let the engine control rev the engine - I wait for that to settlle - then - no gas - foot on brake - shift into reverse the engine revs and WHAM!...something.... drive shafts, u joints, or trans (not sure which) BANGS... the converter loads the drivetrain - foot still on brake - and the revs return to normal - drivetrain loaded normally!

Its been doing this since about 60,000 miles.

Im afraid to let off the brake for fear the truck will take of in reverse!!

The truck idles at the normal 900 or so rpms (no pressure applied to the pedal) - normal idle.

What gives????????

What engine/tranny? (V6 5speed or V8 6 speed)

I have a 2006 Explorer Xlt and it behaves the same way. I took it to several transmission specialists who said that the transmission was OK but could be a computer or solenoid problem. I have not tried reprogramming the computer as yet ($100+tax). The solenoid block is about $500 plus removal and installation. One transmission specialist could not tell me what the problem was and since I have been driving with it like that(50000km=30000miles) to keep on driving it that way. Before I go on a long drive, i will try a reprogram.

The solenoid block sometimes goes out on these which leads to pressure control issues and results in this issue. Could be a programming issue but if it didn't do it before then I suspect the solenoid block.

500 is a bit high for the block...you can get a new one for 300ish if you look around. Do NOT get a "remanufactured" one...most of these are turning out to be faulty parts hawked by dishonest vendors.

Look here for the correct part #. You want the 3rd Revision one:

And here is the replacement procedure:
