Lowering the Explorer

The Explorer is already higher than the Flex to begin with so I wouldn't worry so much about the drop. I don't think the Flex springs looked "slammed" of course I'm coming from an STI on coils.

It doesn't matter if the exp sits higher than the flex stock. Not comparing exp coils on the exp to flex coils onthe flex. Comparing flex coils on the exp to exp coils on the exp. So if the exp coils provide more drop, it'll be lower than the flex coils in the exp....which is too low for me lol

I'm interested in lowering my Sport.

1. Anyone have before and after pics?

2. If you have lowered, what springs did you use? part number?

3. Is it a DIY project if you have a car lift?

4. Are there any changes in other vehicle components that have to be addressed?

5. Does it require a realignment?

6. What actual benefits can we expect other than looks?

7. Can anyone else add additional questions to probe before jumping into this project?

Thanks

Stole this and let the guys know on the Flex and my forum that the Flex could get a little lower if they want now. :)

I too am hoping they release some installed pics to assist in the decision making process.

Finally installed the H&R Springs on Saturday. I feel the ride is much better than stock. I installed the Flex - #51635 springs since I had purchased them already.

Nice pic....I like the look and the advantages of a lower vehicle.

1. Where did you buy them?

2. How much did you pay?

3. Did you install them yourself? If so, how long did it take you?

Thanks, John

@MarlonF, the ex is looking nice.

That's a nice stance. Are you happy with the drop? To you wish it was not as low?

did you install the camber bolts for the rear that the one member found?

Thanks. I'm very happy with the look. I think it is perfect. I feel handling is also much better than stock. I believe i paid around $230 @ THMotorsports ( I purchased the springs before i had the car).

I installed myself using jackstands. Install wasn't too difficult, took me about 5 -6 hours with a trip to store for a universal joint and breaks in between. I used a cordless impact wrench which made process much easier. I plan to get an aligment done eventually. No camber bolt installed. If tires wear out quickly it will be a good excuse to get some new rubber.

Only issue i had was once i was finished my floor jack stopped working, i had to pull out factory jack to get car off the jack stands.

Note: For the rears i used the lower-arm to subframe bolt. I felt i had better access.

Maroln, that looks fantastic. Is that plasti-dip or vinyl on your door handles?

Were camber bolts needed?

Thx.

Darren

I used vinyl for the handles. Wanted to try plasti-dip also but haven't had a chance. Although I believe some have had issues with plasti-dip coming off.

From what I've read you will need the camber bolt to get the alignment to the correct setting. I still haven't taken the car in for alignment.

is it weird or just me...
the H&R explorer springs are the same part # as an audi a4?

You DO NOT want to go any lower than what the flex springs give you. It will look ridiculous and you will rub.

That looks great man

MarlonF, looks perfect. Any updates on ride quality? Rubbing issues?

So far everything is good. No rubbing issues. I'm starting to see alot of Explorer Sports in my area, glad mine looks really diffrent lowered + HID headlights and fogs running all the time.

1. Anyone have before and after pics?

Use the search tool, it is very useful.

2. If you have lowered, what springs did you use? part number?

Everyone uses H&R springs for the Flex. They recently came out with a set for the Explorer, but it may be too aggressive of a drop.

3. Is it a DIY project if you have a car lift?

If you are handy and have a spring compressor, sure.

4. Are there any changes in other vehicle components that have to be addressed?

Not really. A bolt to adjust the camber is all.

5. Does it require a realignment?

All cars that have altered suspension should get a realignment IMHO.

6. What actual benefits can we expect other than looks?

Better handling. Slightly if any less drag, which results in better gas..again that will be very little if at all.

7. Can anyone else add additional questions to probe before jumping into this project?

Thanks
