:biggthump

I'll be having three day weekend on memorial day so if I can't get the engine in this weekend, I'll do it then.

Looks like it's gonna be memorial weekend.

I can't buy a shifter and sundry other things till I get paid Friday.

B&M (same compamy as hurst now) says none of their shifters is made for a 4r70w. Something about the linkage being too longand making it move past the detents.

But since I don't have the stock linkage and I'll have to custom make it anyway I think I can make it work.

You should be able to use something made for a 94/95 Mustang. The SN95 Mustangs came with AODE's, virtually identical to the 4R70W. If you found something close that you liked, call them back and ask if they have it for the SN95 transmission. You still have to deal with fabrication for the Explorer versus the Mustang, but the parts are out there.

I asked about that and he said they didn't have any for the aode either.

I mentioned the Hammershifter listed on summits site as working with the aode. And he said that was because the aode linkage was just the right length.

So as far as I can tell from my research is it just takes getting the linkage just the right length to make the detents in the transmission line up with the detents in the shifter.

Since my trans is on a stand, hopefully Ill be able do get the right length without too much fuss.

Have you got a used SN95 shifter? I would start with that, then you will have a great idea of how the parts will fit, work, and how big they are. You can work with that at the least to get the truck running. With the OEM SN95 shifter in place, any aftermarket shifter for the SN95 should be relatively no trouble. Night,

The explorer shifter arm and cable come at the transmission from the front
If you are going to use any other shifter, for a AOD-E or 4r70w (same thing) then you will most likely have to change out the shift arm in the transmission also, like I did
all aftermarket AOD-E and 4r70w shifters have the cable approach from the rear of the transmission

Explorer = shift arm goes up
Mustang = shift arm goes down

they are different lengths, which determines how much cable travel is needed to reach the next detent

Trying to use ythe 96 floor shifter with the mustang cable and the explorer shift arm was impossible
the shifter "throw" was different then the column mount explorer... so there was no way to reach both P and 1 (so if I adjusted to reach P then I could not get into 1st gear ever) also the detent would never line up.
So I could have added some length to the explorer shift arm and kept fussing with it, or.......get the stang parts and be done with it!

Like Jeff (SVO) I like using OEM parts, easy and cheap to replace

My entire shifter, floor shifter, cable, trans bracket, and shift arm are ALL from a 96 Mustang... it works perfect OD button included

Most aftermarket AOD-E floor shifters come with a shift arm extension that is designed to go over the stock mustang shifter arm... I figured why mess with all this when factory parts are so easy to get for so cheap? no adjustments required

fixed the header/spark plug interference problem.

1/2" spacer plus some 90* spark boots/terminals from MSD.

still will need some heat shielding.

Very nice, that's a good find.

Very cool...

Now drop that motor in there, and we'll see how it all fits IN the frame...

I know there is some slight cutting required on the passenger side frame rail...

Ryan

Damn junkyard.

Part of my harness goin back to the trans is torn up. I'm gonna have to individually wrap them in tape

I have a spare harness!

I can send it to you if you want it...

Ryan

thanks ryan, i really appreciate the offer, but i think it'll be fine. just some scraped wires. and your harness wouldnt get here till next week and im determined to do this this weekend.

it seems to be coming together folks, got my shifter, oil relocation kit, flexible stainless rad hoses, a convenient trans drain plug, and the bit of the firewall harness i needed and my headers are being sandblasted tomorrow. and my kick ass friend will cut the header spacer for me friday out of 1/2" stainless stock.

also tomorrow ill get an engine tilter for the hoist and some fancy steel ford racing valve cover gaskets, ...and something else i can't recall at the moment.

now that i have this shifter i wish i had a revers pattern valvebody... future project.

SWEETNESS

I spent like 14 hours in one day on the shifter, re-did it all a week later in about 2 hours LOL
yours should go much faster :)

be patient!! it will come together

Matt, I can throw it in a Flat Rate box, and have it to you in no time if you DO need it.

Are you using the SN95 bracket & linkage that 410 was talking about too?

Ryan

I'll be custom cutting a shift arm out of the ones that came with the shifter. Unless one happens to be just right.

Got me an obd port. 1" intake spacer, engine tilter, and such.

OOOOOOOOOOOOH An OBD-II port with wires? Sweet! I had to get one of those too!

Dont forget to hook up the one pin that gets 12V+, I could not for the life of me find in my wiring books where this wire went, luckily I realized I had no + at teh port, I know it needs power.....sure enough pin/circuit 21 (I think, have to go look back at the thread) is indeed 12V+ constant (cig lighter)

this way you can link to the truck without using scanner power

I'll have to remember that.

I wore myself out lookin for the damn thing up and down back and forth around the dash and my dad sticks his head under, Pulls off the stupid plastic cover and goes "there it is."

Sometimes I can be very stupid.
