MOAB EXPLORER EXTRAVAGANZA 2001

Brian1 and Paul,
We are not sure, but we might be staying at the KOA. We just aren't sure if it will be a trailer or a cabin. I still need to talk that part over with the folks.

As for our truck, I don't know what I am, but we do plan on just having a good time.

There is Red Cone, Radical hill and a few others in the same area, but the biggest thing is the snow. It could still have 4-6 feet of snow in May.
Maybe there is something around the Montrose area you could do.

What skid plates are most important? Front plate(steering/transfer case), Tank plate and what else?

Brian,
Top of the World is an awesome place and you can do it stock. As my signature shows, I have a '99 Sport SOHC and did it at last years Moab get-together. We did Gemini Bridges in the morning and Top of the World in the afternoon on Friday before the official runs. The only damage I ended up with was my step bar on the passenger side. The front corner got pushed up a 1/2 inch or so.
The most dangerous situation I got into was kind of dozing off on the highway to the turn-off, dropping onto the shoulder and missing a highway sign by about a foot.
I do have skidplates (the standard factory ones for x-fer case and fuel tank) and they are a neccessity. They were either $120 or $180 for the two and cheap insurance. Your front differential should have one as standard equipment. It's kind of cheesy, but better then nothing. This was for anybody having '98 or newer. The skidplates used to be standard equipment if you had 4-wheel drive.
I also have 16' wheels with 255/70 tires. As I was joking back in Moab, this gives me about an extra 1/2 inch clearing. ;)
As has been said a few times before, it mostly depends on picking the right line to stay out of trouble. On these runs the modified vehicles quite often pick the tougher lines just to show off. ;) ;)

WOW, 11 pages and counting

OK, so I've been away for a while. I'm still wanting to do the trip. I haven't read the whole thread, but I will be. Riff, you and the other midwesterners that may be going; I am willing to meet up with ya'll somewhere along I-80 so that we can travel in a convoy. This was an absolute great time last year, even though I chickened out on the camping thing (something about 30 mph wind and sand).

Rose Garden Hill

I just noticed..... if any of the modifieds and BigDawgs that have already run Top of the World want a more adventursome avenue to get there, we could bail out a few miles before the entrance and take the back way in on 4-rated Rose Garden Hill and still connect to Top of the World at that four-way intersection before making the climb up to the Top. I'll be locked by then and I think I'd like to try that.

Hey Tom, good to hear from you. Where have you been lately, my friend?

Well, Gerald, it's good to hear from you as well. Been kind of tied up with work, work, and more work. Actually, I have been putting in a few extra hours, plus I've been a little active with the election and I picked up a couple of wiring jobs. So, I've spent very little time at the site of late.

BTW, do you know off-hand the phone number for the Silver Sage? I want to get my reservation in early!! Also, we may want to let that T-shirt shop know that we are coming again. They sure enjoyed the rush of customers last year. :)

Silver Sage Number

435 259-4420

thanks, Rob!

Is this the number to call and reserve these cabins? Can you guys share some more details on this subject of reservations? I might want to get mine in as soon as possible but don't really know where to start.

Appreciate,

Tom....I don't know if you read the whole thread, but some of us from the flatlands here are going to be trailering out there. now, we just spent 2 days in attica this weekend (it was freakin cool), and we saw this big ol peterbuilt pullin a flatbed trailer w\ about 15 bazillian quads and dirt bikes on it. now this kinda got our motors running.....Kampy has a cdl...and we all might go in together...i really don't know if this is plausable, but its somthing to think about....and if we don't do that, then i am going to be hauling mine and another vehicle on a 2 car trailer..........basically im saying this, cause you will probably want to go faster than us....

also...did you stop half way, or more than half way? if so...where did you? is denver waaaay more than half way?

Riffman,

You're right, I hadn't read the entire thing. It's pretty long. :)

Last time I went, I took 2-1/2 days going out. I stopped in Omaha, Neb. (10 hours from Cleveland) on the way out, then Denver (about 10 more hours). I met up with Brett G. and Ryan P. in Denver and made the rest of the trip with them. It's 6 or so hours from Denver to Moab. It's about 26 hours of actual driving time from here to Moab, driving reasonably close to the speed limit most of the way (except that part from Denver to Moab.

Coming back, I did it in 2 days. I stopped in Avoca, Iowa on the way back in a cheap motel. They were long days, but it was worth the drive.

How fast would you be driving the rig? I know that in Nebraska and Colorado (east of Denver), trucks are allowed to go 75 MPH along with the cars. If you can travel that fast without trouble, we could still convoy.

Also, you may want to contact some OTR truckers and see what fees they may charge you at the weigh stations. It may be costly to take a semi across, though you may escape the fees if you travel non-commercial. I don't really know the rules, but I've heard truckers complaining about the $200 fee in Colorado.

Tom..I didn't even realize the fees and stuff....like i said...its in extreme planning stages though....

Hey perry....what exactly is radical hill? got pics?

Yep, the number to call for the Motel is (435) 259-4420.

I made reservations early just to make sure I had a place to stay cheap. KOA has good rates, but it's fun staying the same place as several others in our group. Should be close to $60 a night + or - after taxes and stuff.

This place was clean, but don't expect a resort type setting.

Happy Trails

Thanks for the info. I might go shopping on expedia to see if I can find something else. Anybody else on this issue???

Anyone looking for a roommate?

Later,

Hey, does anyone who went last year know what the name of the motel that is just down the road from the Silver sage? You know, as you are looking out towards the road. It's across the street and to the left. It's 2 story and I believe blue in color, and right next to the Cevron station.
The silver Sage has good rates, but I was hoping for someplace that's a little nicer to stay at, and still be close to the rest of you guys. Other wise we will be staying at the Days Inn.

Were is the KOA from these motels you are talking about?
We will need someplace to meet in the evening to visit won't we????????
Just don't want to get to far away from the rest of the group.
Someone was asking about reservations at the KOA. You can go to there web site and reserve there.

I don't have any pictures of radical hill. There are three trails close together, Red cone, radical hill, and I think Webster pass. You might have to do a search on a search engine. At the end of May they might still be snowed in also. It might be nice on the plains, but still snow in the hills.
Matt might have some pictures I don't know. Sorry I can't be more help.

Okay, I've been lacking here...I've become really lazy! Andre I'll take ya up on the cabin should I go...My parents are willing to hear me out about the trip...Not to mention...They take lighter to the truckin thing since you offered to pick me up to go to attica....The find it extremely impressive as to how friendly everyone is here....But I still haven't convinced em yet....But then again, should I...I'll take a cabin with ya....as of the Semi....Bottom line, it's a semi and that would be so sweet! Man, I'd love to roll in that to Moab!

Ray, you are describing the Moab Valley Inn. http://www.moabvalleyinn.com/

No Room at the Inn.....

I just called the " Nicer " place listed by Gerald. They are full May 18 & 19. Seems like the fancier places are booking up at Moab. Found a house though that sleeps 12 for $250 a night.

Dead Link Removed

Glad I have a place to stay.
