MOAB EXPLORER EXTRAVAGANZA 2001

There's also the Quality Inn for about the same price as Ray is quoting for the Best Western. I stayed there at last years Moab get-together. Very comfortable, lots of room (mini suite).
I'm sure Matt Adams will agree that the shower is great (he used mine after the Kane Creek run since we got back to late for him to use the one at the camp ground).
There's also a brand new Sleep Inn (cheaper than Quality Suites).
I had kind of decided not to attend next years run (conflicting date with something else), but I'm starting to get the urge to try and rearrange things to make it possible for me to go. Maybe even drag the wife along. We'll see.

yeah, Im still undecided on where I'll be staying this year... staying at Lions back was great but at the same time it'd be great to have a nice comfortable place to shower and sleep and be prepared for the next day :). I agree the place Peter stayed seemed pretty good (though I feel bad that I plugged up the shower with sand, LOL). I guess we'll see what kind of repairs I have to make to the Explorer before hand...

LET'S ORGANIZE

We've got nearly six months to go and this thread is already a monster. It'll have a thousand posts before we get there, and it will be hard to find info buried in all of this. I've discussed it with Rick and am going to start a "Moab 2001 Itinerary" thread just like I did for the CCR2000 run. The thread will remain closed but will be updated with information critical to the run as it develops, so we will have a central source of info that doesn't get buried in a thousand posts. I'll throw a couple of run suggestions into it but we've got months to plan so all that will change so keep suggesting what you want to do.

It is already time to plan. Moab is already filling up for that weekend and if you want to come you'll need to consider making reservations.

I need info such as:
1) Name(s), number with you (family)
2) Arrival and departure down to half day (will you arrive on Friday before noon so you can participate in an afternoon run, etc)
3) Where you are staying or camping
4) Trail difficulty preference(s)
5) Vehicle class
NOTE: I will leave it up to you to classify your vehicle. Be aware that we now have some true BigDawgs and I suspect they may want to try trails like Pritchett Canyon and Upper Helldorado so if you want to run with the Dawgs know what you are getting into beforehand. You can designate what you are willing to run when giving your trail difficulty preference. There are several in our group that are what I call "Almost Growed-Up BigDawgs".

Gofast made an excellent point in TRYING (ha!) to keep groups around seven. Once groups get over ten it REALLY starts eating up time on the trial (there is also that little thing about having to pay the BLM a group fee if we are too obvious). I wouldn't have any problem at all with three different groups each day: Stock/SuperStock doing one set of trails, Modifieds on another, and the BigDawgs tackling the extreme stuff. We can combine and meet in sections so the whole group can fellowship. For example, I think a trip to Top of the World can be split between that trail, and Modifieds+ taking the back way in via Rose Garden Hill. So we'll all still get to Top of the World, just different ways. We have all year to figure this out.

As time goes on we will include dinner plans and etc into that thread. For the record, I'd like to suggest dinners at later times to give us more time on the trail (8pm instead of 7pm, for example). We have plenty of time to figure this all out. Many people have already noted on this thread that they are coming but I would appreciate more info: Sinjin said he made resv at Silver Sage but I still do not know what nights and specific arrival/departure, I don't know Riffman's real name (sorry), etc etc etc. So let's get some info to me and start this other thread. You can email me if you prefer. If you have said something about being on the trip, and that information doesn't make it to that thread, it means I missed it or you didn't give enough info.

It will take me awhile to get the thread organized, but expect it to be current and running by sometime early next week.

Is anyone thinking of POSSIBLY prerunning Moab, maybe at the EJS2001? I know Rick asked that a couple of pages back. I don't know if I could pull that off (vacation time) but it is a temptation.

Hey, maybe you would get your other name back "Jeepeater!"
Good idea Gerald, I will send my info to you once I get organized enough to make reservations.

When is the J**P run?
I might be interested in doing that, we would have to see.

I am like Brian 1 we are going to be there, just not sure were we will stay. I will e-mail you with what I know.
That is a good guestion Gerald,
Can people tell you everything except were they are staying, then let you know that later? Maybe they know when, but not how many. Is it O.K. to give info you know now?
Yes we have time, but I think it will go fast.

Yes, send me the information as you know it and I will incorporate it into the thread. You can add more info later.

I just found this in another newsgroup (photography) and thought I'd pass it along.
----
I've been in the Moab region just about every
month of the year. There is one time period to avoid:
late may-early june to sometime in july. Biting nats
come out when it first gets hot and are beyond terrible!
No bug repellant stops them--many thousands per cubic meter
at their peak! The heat kills them off.

matt adams, everyone knows the mods on it. I'll be there all days probably (unless like last year I break stuff!). I'm trying to make arrangements for trailering out my Explorer... trying to find a trailer that can tow two explorers so someone else fromt he denver area can be towed too :). Depending on the trails that are chosen, I'll probably be doing some easy-moderate stuff, and maybe some difficult stuff (I don't want to rbeak much, but if I got the trailer that'll make it easier) :)

Trail ratings seem to vary from region to region. Some are 1-10 with 10 being toughest. Moab is 1-4 with 4+ the toughest. At least that's what I remember from last year. A 3 is about it for stockers like me. As I said before, I made Top of the World last year and it's rated a 3. I believe doing the loop the other direction and including the Rose Garden makes it a 3+. If you don't mind some damage (step bars, rocker panels, plastic below bumper incorporating fog or driving lights, etc.) you might want to push to 3+.

sorry about that Gerald... I think I can handle some 4- 4+ trails... but I'll probably stick with 2-3 unless I have a trailer :). I am also oging to plan on staying at Lions Back again, but that's tentative... depends on how much repairs to the explorer cost me between now and then. if repairs are cheap, probably be staying at the comfort inn or the sleep inn there, if there expensive.. Lions back :).

you guys are going to have to place me in a group, cause i have no idea....heres my stuff though....

5.5" superlift up front.
custom SOA in the rear
2" body lift
35" Dunlop Mud Rovers

This winter:
4.56 plus lockers front and rear
and possibly a winch....

so i really don't know where i belong...as far as trails...BRING IT AWN!!!! im trailering...im just fearful of offcamber....but since i am trailering...it probably won't bother me as much....hardest trail....hmmm...i don't know any of them...so i really don't know...

i will be showing up friday night...probably close to 10 or so....unless i decide to drive through the nite....i dunno yet, thouh...and will be leaving monday morning....

riffman, your vehicle would be int he "big dawg" category, but that doesn't mean that you are... no offense but if your really frightened by the tougher trails and off-camber positions and so forth, don't take those trails :). Ask the guys that went on the pre-run last year (rick and ryan penner), I was scared of off-camber my first time out there and held up the group all the time I was going so slow (especially on hells revenge), and in big groups that will really hold up everyone. I'm over my fear of off-camber now for the most part... I still get a little nervous but I know a lot more about how far I can tip the explorer before it'll get on two wheels... theres several times in Moab when I was at about a 10-15 degree angle sideways (which isn't much, considering a 90 degree angle is on your side, and we've had explorers at over 45 degrees with no tipping) but because of the rock's and so forth I could've sworn I was about ready to tip... scared the crap out of me a few times, Im better now though :). Hell's revenge is especially tricky... sometimes you won't be able to see where your going at all because of the angle, othertimes you'll see, butyou won't want to see... :)

What have we forgot???

Are we missing something everybody??? I know that Moab is a huge deal, but lets not forget something. TRUCKHAVEN2001 It's under 2 months away now and there's already about 30 people locked and ready. Just some food for thought.

leebo,
I would love to go, but we just can't afford it. Just hope we will have everything done by Moab.

Brian1,
Are you still looking at the KOA? I have sent out e-mails to all the places that have the cabins, but haven't heard back from them yet. I think the cabins at the KOA seem to be the best so far. I know at Moab the cabins were pretty nice.
We still haven't decided yet.
Sounds like Hix has stayed at the Lions back camp ground, maybe he could help you out also.

Such as $, facilities, etc.

Lions Back campground last year was a kick, I stayed there with Hix, Dignan, and a few other folks. BYU was having a party there at the time which meant no sleep involuntarily the first night, voluntarily the next night :). I think it was about $10 a night, and they have showers near the front of the campground, and port-o-potties scattered throughout. The only probably was the sand, pretty dang sandy :). It was like camping at the sand dunes, you just have sand everywhere when you get back.

Hum.....

Well, I'm back from thanksgiving and my hopes aren't high. The parents aren't liking the Moab idea b/c of my financial status. I'm still working on getting a job at school next sememster and I think they're hesitant on me going across the country for a weekend of wheeling. I've tried to convince them and my moms not so bad on the idea as my dad is. Damn! I'm down, but not out yet, but the chances are slim....Matt...Riff is crazy, at times I wonder what he's thinking....He seemed to have no problem going through mud holes and take on about 4 inches of water with his 35's, but thats mud, and Moab is rocks...So Riff, you just may start to fall into my sissy catagory(our light rivalry)
hehe
Thanks,
Pete
