MOAB EXPLORER EXTRAVAGANZA 2001

Riff, you mean you won't try?

lol

I'm coming in on Friday, someone please forward phone number for that Silver Sage Motel so I can call them. The only place on the net that has rooms now is Super 8 and Ramada. Don't know much about these but perhaps someone is willing to fill me in???

Thanks,

BOOKED

I'm all ready for the trip. Just booked a room at Silver Sage from May 18th till the 21st. I'm all set. By the way, it was the last room available.

Now I got to get working on my rig but think that there's still plenty of time left......... right?

Thanks for all the help!

I finally found the video of the rollover of my old blazer. I sold it to my buddies dad 2 months before we went to Moab EJS. Well he rolled it at potato salad hill and was caught on camera.

Here is the link to the rollover video. You will need quicktime to view it.

OUCH!....Looks like a littl more gas and um, keeping the wheels straight would have prevented that. Can you tell us the story behind it HIX? What brought the front end to the left like that?

It is so steep and the top is gravel. The front tires spun and well...you know the rest.

Ummm, no, you can't say that for sure. PSH is a minefield of rugged rocks covered by slick sand on an extreme angle that is much steeper than the pictures seem to be able to show once they are developed and shown to others who were not there.

You can't plan to turn your wheel one way or another while cimbing this hill, you have to plan ahead before you even try. You have to remember that the driver can see NOTHING; he's looking skyward out his windshield and dependent on the feel of his vehicle when he hits the ground. When his rig plops down on a rock it's no different than being blindfolded (or looking straight up to sky) and having to guess which way the bull is going to spin once he's already been strapped on top of the beast.

"It ain't as easy as it looks in the movies".

Oh yeah, it's just a simple drive by the town dump to go look at a little hill. It is not on a trail that you have to get to. A station wagon can make it there. When you see Potato Salad Hill in person it is not much to look at, and you may quite likely be completely underwhelmed.

Driving up it, well, that's another matter.

RE: OUCH

Hey, Hix. One question...

Other than the obvious body damage, what did that rollover break on the Blazer? (I hope it didn't break anything on the occupants!) Just curious.

GJarret,

I agree with you. It's hard to judge a video and also when you are in the truck looking at sky. It's a shame, that blazer looked tough. Too bad it had to end up that way. I bet that can ruin anyone's weekend!

Hey Tom Wilk!!!! I can't e-mail ya from here....so are you going to be taking the trip in 2 days from Ohio? If so, where are you going to stop? for us, a little over the half way point is Oakley, KS. So i was just seeing if you wanted to run to moab with some of us Illinoisans. What do you think?

p.s. i ended up getting a tow rig, and a trailer for 2....so me and kampy are gonna be on it...in case you were wondering...

Hey Riff

Oakley KS... You must be thinking of taking I-70 all the way across. According to AAA, it takes a little longer that way for me, but its pretty doggone close. The last trip, I took I-80 all the way to where Colorado bumps against Nebraska then took I-76 into Denver to hook up with I-70 (along with Brett and Ryan).

Anyway, either route is good for me. I'm about 800 miles from Kansas City, MO which would be about the 1/2 way point from Cleveland. Perhaps we could stay somewhere between Kansas City and Oakley, like Salina.

You and Kampy with the rig and me with the Red Sport... thoughts of Smokey and the Bandit come to mind.

"Son, there ain't no way you could have come from my loins. And, when I git back home, I'm gonna punch your momma right in the mouth". - Sheriff Buford T. Justice talking to his inept son. Great flick and an inspiration for many a power slide.

Anyway, back to the subject. What route do you intend to take? 55 to Kansas City, then across 70? And, what day are you planning to get there. I'm trying to look at a Thursday arrival, but I don't know for sure.

Riff, I vote for going I-80 like Tom did, that way any chi town boys could tag along, but I guess it doesn't really matter much.
Tom, as for your quote, I bet Riff's dad has said or thought the same thing hundreds of times. None of us that know him can figure out where he came from.

I don't care much about the route, I'll stop where you guys stop. I'm easy, you guys just point to the mud hole and I go through it.

Oh ya, I am in for the convoy.......seems like you guys forgot about me....*sniffle*

well, see there was this wierd milk man.......haha..riiight...

as far as the directions go...well...yeah..ill be damned....i just typed in my same numbers for http://maps.yahoo.com, and it gave me the drive that you guys are talking about!!! its strange that it gave me a completely different set of directions!!!!

so yeah..im all for 80...sounds good to me...

and no, matt, we didn't forget you....we knew we were leaving you out!!! lol...just kidding... :D

OK, so if we settle on I-80, we need to find a suitable halfway point. I stayed in a dive in Avoca, IA on the way home, but it was actually closer to home than to Moab. It's a small town, just east of the Iowa Border. Something west of Omaha, NE might be good.

when do all you guys from Ill. plan on going thru Denver? Maybe some of us from that area can join up with you the rest of the way.
More Explorer's going down I-70 the better!!

Let's see...Two tires and rims popped the right front axle and twisted the axle tube. The body was gone.

Here is another rollover...this one by the Famous Mr Ed.

It cracks me up how his wife always yells at him! If you have ever watched on of his videos you'll know how much she gets you your nerves. I'd roll my truck just to get her voice out of my head.
