My quest for 30 MPG - Ford Explorer Gas Mileage Tips

aldive, i saw a funny device that supposedly boosts highway mileage in Harbor Freight Tools today... Not sure if you've seen this yet, got me laughing, I snapped a photo with my pheon real quick. From what I read on the package, you hook up 'around?' your fuel line, and it 'separates' the fuel molecules? lol. no idea really but here it is.

Lol, I wish we had 80's gas prices.... I'm close to getting a new 08 ranger pretty much just for mileage and reliability. Going with the 4 cylinder... pretty much everything Al has done, I plan on doing a 'version' with the Ranger, to see how high I can get it... I'll have plenty of trips on I-20 and I-95 seeing my grandparents to test it out. Wish me luck!

I don't know why just one magnet is sold. I read (can't find site now) some time ago that not just one magnet is supposed to be used. One is supposed to go on the rail with the north side i believe or maybe south side adjacent to the rail. Then you are supposed to have a very wide magnet over the intake with the opposite pole adjacent to the intake. The two files are supposed to influence the air and fuel molecules with attracting charges. It is also supposed to align the molecules. I went through the whole process of pricing powerful and big enough (recommended) magnets was just was too much.

Fuel magnet is just a waste of time. I haven't heard of anyone testing it the right way.

Yep that looks like what I read.

A rail magnet alone is definitely a waste of time. I wonder if anyone has tested it in the suggested configuration.

Physics says wind resistance increases with the cube of speed. So, if speed increases by a factor of 2 (e.g., from 30 to 60 mph), wind resistance goes up by a factor of 8.

That pretty much erases any gains one might hope to get from taking advantage of taller gearing.

Of course, no one wants to cross a county at school-zone speed. So it's a matter of how much money your time is worth.

Oh, and whether going too slow makes you a road hazard.

Of course, I know what physics says...I also know that there are more variables involved than wind resistance.

Given your statement, I assume 10 MPH would be more efficient than 30, or 50. Do you stand behind that?

Exactly.

The fact that your Explorer mileage didn't suffer at highway speeds when using A/C led me to conclude that you weren't using all the torque available at that load/RPM, with A/C off.

I see that you're creating your own software for your engine computer. Did that take a lot of time and effort to learn to do effectively?

The software package is available from SCT ( http://www.sctflash.com/ ). Its the Racer Pro Package.

Yes, it took considerable research into engine management to understand what parameters I could modify to increase gas mileage.

Its a continual learning process and a lot of trial and error testing.

Has it been worth it? Hell yes.

The only way I'm gonna get 30 mpg is to be towed somewhere!!! I just did a round trip to Philly (330 miles) and averaged 16.5mpg. All except about 25 miles was highway mileage at 75-80mph (I stayed with traffic). The best I have EVER done was when the truck was brand new and had no modifications to it whatsoever, and that was about 20mpg. The only comfort I can take is that we have a gas war going on in town between Wal-Mart and Sheetz, and right now I'm only paying .77/gal

I know now I am paying $3.69 PG!!!! And its only suppose to go up!!!!!!!
