I went to O'Rileys today to get a new water pump they gave me one that they said would fit my 1996 Ford explorer XLT 4 door 4.0 after installing the new pump I noticed the clutch fan won't screw on to the new one is there anything I can do? Is there a flex fan I can buy for the new pump? Or what fan came with this water pump please help thank you

Attached pics are the old and the new water pump

Wow I feel like a complete ****ing idiot thank you! Normal I'm used to a cap not a washer like that thanks!

Ha ha, just glad it was somebody else today. We've all done it in one way or another.

Glad you got it working.

One last tip.

In order to SECURELY tighten your fan to your water pump when the water pump mounted to the engine, you'll have to do one of the following.

You can place a large rubber strap wrench around your water pump pulley, let it lock up against something on the engine, and then tighten large fan nut.

If you don't have a strap wrench, you will need to get a long screwdriver, at least a foot long, and place it fully across and under two of the water pump bolts, let the screwdriver lock up against something on the engine, and then proceed to turn the large fan nut.

As you stand in front of your Ex, the fan nut is "righty tighty"

I will add that if you can afford it, the pneumatic air tool attachment (goes into an air hammer) is awesome for removal/installation. One quick pull of the trigger on the air hammer and the fan clutch is either removed (loosened up) or installed (tightened down). Well worth the cost (it was like $60-70 or thereabouts).

@DP96XLT

You caught my interest - what tool are you describing.

Do you have a Link or Pic to it?

Now this bad boy has gotten me out of countless jams with oil filters, water pump pulleys and power steering pulleys - I have (3) of them ;)

I've never found better built than this - fiberglass reinforced plastic handle and kevlar reinforced braided extra wide rubber belt.

Currently being sold for $16.72 on Amazon under the name/model: Superior Tool 3613 Strap Wrench, 6"

Formerly sold as: Empire Level 28620 Strap Wrench

^^^^^ WOAH!!! 😲

Thanks for the link @massacre !

Put the serpentine belt back on and apply tension to the tensioner with a 3/8" breaker bar. You can tighten the clutch fan down with a 36mm wrench.

i don’t have experience with that particular tool, Lisle makes one that I used but it is a lot more expensive. But the Lisle tool has a lot more big sizes and I needed the bigger sizes at the time.
The advantage to this tool is that if you have an air hammer, you don’t have to grip the belt or use a screwdriver on the pulley bolts. The air hammer will usually loosen the nut without needing to keep the pulley from spinning

How well do they last? I have an IR air hammer that's not a tool of half measures. The trigger has two positions: OFF and DESTROY.

they last a good while, since it literally takes 2 seconds to break the nut free

That 36mm wrench can also be used to remove and install the inner tie rods
