I have a 1996 Explorer w/a 5.0 Liter. I am trying to replace the oxygen sensor on the left side after the catalytic converter. I can see how to get to the sensor itself to remove it but it seems impossible to get to plug to unplug the old one and plufg in the new one.

Any suggestions?

DON"T replace it! All it does is monitor the cat's efficiency.Your nose can do that for a heckuva lot cheaper! If you already bought it try to return, eventhough it is an electrical part. Replacing those is a waste of money.

THAT AFT SENSOR HAS NO EFFECT ON FUEL METERING.

O2 sensor

I've been told that it's that sensor that is causing my check engine light to stay on. Can that be right?

O2 Sensor Wire

Yes, I had someone check the codes and verify that it is that sensor that is bad.

My problem is that I can't see how to reach the plug to get the wires unpluged.

Well sounds like one of those PITA things you just have to do. I don't know your experience level but you learn to "see" with your fingers on things like this. The human hand is amazing. Maybe get a mirror if you can't actually see it.

Remove the center console--very easy to do.
under it is a removable access panel,
after removing the panel, the plug will be right there, easy to reach

Ahhh that's cheating! Nice that you access it like that though.

the floor opening on our 5.0L trucks is the ONLY way to access the 3 02 sensor plugs and a few other items as well, the bellhousing bolts, trans wiring connections on the pass side... they really stuffed the V8 In there.
With a body lift it is possible to get in there from underneath, but you are still working blind (by feel) last time I did that it would have been quicker to pull the carpet back and console......again

Replace O2 sensors in 5.0L Explorer

Thanks --- That worked perfectly. Took very little time to replace and I was able to pass NY State emmisions.

Uh... what? Is this a joke?

if I have a rear (downstream) 02 sensor throw a codeI would replace one of my up stream (before cat) 02 sensors with a new unit and use the old upstream sensor as my new cataylst monitor

The downstream (after cat) sensors only monitor catalyst efficiency, they do not effect fuel trims but they will throw a code and let you know you have either a circuit fault (usually wireing pin or bad 02 sensor) or you have less catalyst efficiency then you should (this could be raw gas being dumped, clogged cat, etc.....)

Oxygen Sensor

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer, The error code from what I can tell is 41, 4 quick flashes pause than a 1 long flash. Oxygen sensor? Strong exhaust smell, sitting at a light or even going down the road without constant pressure on the gas pedal, Rpms are constant up and down.Once you apply gas its fine.

Thanks For Any Help,
Richie

Your in the wrong section, you should be in the stock 1991-1994 section. Also searching for "code 41" will probably bring up some info about your problem.
