Bumping this for 2021.

I have to address this leak. New style adapter (99+), not the cooler. Anyone have a current source for the o-rings?

The last time I needed them was a couple of years ago, and I got one from Ford. I got the part numbers from my dealer parts guy, and he ordered the one they could still get. The other I had to search online with the part number, and I found them on eBay I think. So the part number would be the easiest way if you can get them, otherwise measuring them is the next method.

The o-rings off the OHV work just fine on the SOHC. Replaced mine last year and still no leaks

The o-rings are the same for both the adapter with an oil cooler, and the regular version.

I don't know about the 4.0 adapter, I've never seen one of those off.

That Felpro kit from O'Reilly Auto says it fits the V6, but not the V8. I'm sure they are almost the same o-rings, the small one is most likely, but the big one might be different.

I’ve read all sorts of ****. Some say the cooler and non-cooler are the same, others say they are different different, some say the large o-ring is an oil filter gasket, others say it isn’t.

I may just have to pull this thing to find out. Hate not having parts in hand, but it is what it is.

I have had both in my hands at the same time. I attempted to swap the non cooler version for a spare that has the cooler in it. That was two years or so back. The simple filter mount adapter can be removed, with great difficulty. But the one with the cooler cannot be installed without also R&Ring the water pump with it.

The short hose is way too short to be able to install separately, and I couldn't put the adapter on with the hose at the same time. I can't explain that fully, just that you can only get one hand in there to both hold the adapter, and tighten the bolt at the same time.

The two adapters are identical on the engine side, they use the same mounting bolt, and the same o-rings.

If you set about removing the adapter, remove as much around that as possible, first. I'd take off the sway bar if I did it again, and maybe loosen the steering rack. There is almost no room in there to get at the mounting bolt with your hand and a tool. I dislike that adapter big time.

I suggest trying a different adapter, FMS makes one that can rotate any amount, and mounts a little closer to the engine. If it will clear and be easier to R&R, that would be worth the $85 price. That one is also made for an old block thread adapter(the FL1A version), and it takes an FL1A filter. The block adapter requires a large Allen wrench to remove it, it's about 1/2" or so in size. I used a chisel back end to check the size one time, I've forgotten what it was.

4.0 OHV Write Up w/ Pics

Not a 5.0 BUT at least you know what to generally expect.

Removing the main "oil filter adapter" mounting bolt was "forehead sweating/oh sheet, hear we go" experience to say the least...

Parts gathered from a combination of Ebay and Rock Auto.

Some people on posts (several years back) have asked for part numbers for the Oil Cooler 'O' Rings.

Following is what I found for my '97 Mercury Mountaineer (5.0 L)

Oil Cooler to Engine Block 'O' Ring: AS568A-146 (VITON)

Oil Cooler Bolt 'O' Ring: AS568A-21 (VITON)

If the factory O ring is still supple and square you can re use it, maybe apply a thin film of permatex ultimate to both sides first

I do believe the squared gasket from adapter to block is the same as the fl1a oil filter...... but it has been a while.
I usually get my O rings in the Felpro engine rebuild kits so I have not had to buy one for a long time (I have lots of spare gaskets and incomplete kits)

Okay thanks. I have a bunch of 820 and 1A filters, so hopefully one of those will mate up.

We shall see. I’ll report back in a few days.

If all else fails, ATP-205 works great. Used it on some old gaskets and seals on a vehicle where the manufacture or aftermarket no longer makes and soaked them in the stuff overnight and it worked like a charm.

shoot........ that's a great idea.....Thanks!
I had to go looksee what ATP-205 is
soak old gaskets, I can use that idea!

I wonder if it’s just kerosene or similar.

I once soaked some old carburetor o-rings in kerosene. Came out the next day and they were damn near double in size.

I've done it with brake fluid

USE THE CHART BELOW TO SIZE COMPARE AND DETERMINE WHICH O-RING YOU NEED. O-Rings' sizes have been standardized by number:

ATP-205 is a plasticizer, a type of chemical used in rubber manufacturing to set hardness and flexibility
