let me correct you, all the OHV 4.0s take the FL1-A the SOHC 4.0s take the FL820s
you must be right! i will notify the dealership i work at tommorow that we've been puttin the wrong filters in

it may be the early sohcs took fl1-as but i will gladly take a picture of my 03 with an 820 up in there...then grab a copy of the ol' oil and filter chart from work and post it?
You are obviously BOTH wrong. Depending on the year and engine, the engine *might* be either an FL820 or an FL1A.
and that saved me ten minues THATS OUR CHART ^^^

i knew i had the story somewhat right
EDIT:except ours is up to 09
But I can also tell you that your chart is not correct. Ford has back-rated the oil recommendations, basically recommending Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic for almost all their motors (with several notable exceptions). The chart shows Ford as recommending 5W20 for a 2000 F-150, despite 5W20 not being available until the 2001 on only some of the vehicles, and despite Ford recommending 5W30 from the factory at that time.
However, their revised rating also included the 4.0 SOHC Explorer motors going back to 1997, and that chart still shows those as needing 5W30... So the chart directly contradicts Ford's recommendations at least twice.
The bottom line is that you should use the filter size recommended from the factory. If you're using 820s, 1A's, 400s, or any other filter or oil selection based on nothing more than that chart, you're a fool at best. Remind me not to frequent your service bay.
edit: Oh, and getting back to the original question, a 96 5.0 in an Explorer calls for an FL820 per page 405 of the owner's manual. If you put an FL-1A on there, it will not tighten down properly.
The AutoZone listing is, as usual, incorrect. Another reason I hate going to those clowns...
