It sounds like a change for 2002 to use the same filter in everything. I personally don't like the small filters, I didn't like it for my first 95 Crown Vic. If I found an adapter up in there I'd remove it and install an FL1A mounting adapter. Take us a picture the next time you change the oil.

so if the area below the year is red then that is the years that particular filter will fit correct?

let me correct you, all the OHV 4.0s take the FL1-A the SOHC 4.0s take the FL820s

you must be right! i will notify the dealership i work at tommorow that we've been puttin the wrong filters in  it may be the early sohcs took fl1-as but i will gladly take a picture of my 03 with an 820 up in there...then grab a copy of the ol' oil and filter chart from work and post it? ;)

You are obviously BOTH wrong. Depending on the year and engine, the engine *might* be either an FL820 or an FL1A.

and that saved me ten minues THATS OUR CHART ^^^ i knew i had the story somewhat right :D

EDIT:except ours is up to 09 :D

But I can also tell you that your chart is not correct. Ford has back-rated the oil recommendations, basically recommending Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic for almost all their motors (with several notable exceptions). The chart shows Ford as recommending 5W20 for a 2000 F-150, despite 5W20 not being available until the 2001 on only some of the vehicles, and despite Ford recommending 5W30 from the factory at that time.

However, their revised rating also included the 4.0 SOHC Explorer motors going back to 1997, and that chart still shows those as needing 5W30... So the chart directly contradicts Ford's recommendations at least twice.

The bottom line is that you should use the filter size recommended from the factory. If you're using 820s, 1A's, 400s, or any other filter or oil selection based on nothing more than that chart, you're a fool at best. Remind me not to frequent your service bay.

edit: Oh, and getting back to the original question, a 96 5.0 in an Explorer calls for an FL820 per page 405 of the owner's manual. If you put an FL-1A on there, it will not tighten down properly.

The AutoZone listing is, as usual, incorrect. Another reason I hate going to those clowns...

The FL820s have a 22x1.5mm thread size.. The FL1A's have a 3/4x16 thread size.. Obviously not the same so they wouldn't be interchangable on the SOHC.

Apprently in 2002 according to a friend at Ford, they changed the oil filter for the 4.0 SOHC to go with the 3rd gen body style.

My '01 4.0 sohc takes the smaller/metric filter.

Hopefully someone will be nice enough to take a picture of the oil filter mounting flange in the small filter trucks. I bet a call to Ford would find two different oil filter adapters available.

better yet, next time i do an oil change at work on a 4.0 that takes an 820 i will take a pic of it with the filter off and with the new one on

Good good. I need to take out the FL1A adapter from my 347 block, and install the FL820S adapter. The Allen wrench required to change those is very large.

Never before has the simple oil change been so... uh... not simple. :D

What's the deal with the oil tho? Did Ford change the recommendation from 5W30 to 5W20 for the OHV too, or just the SOHC?

This is ridiculous, I've been using 5W30 for years. Why switch?

Ford found a better oil... Their semi-syn 5-20 is an excellent product, and I think it boiled down to them being able to go to one oil across the entire product line as a cost savings. There's nothing wrong with using plain ol' dino-based 5-30 if you want...

don't switch! all 4.0s take 5w 30 from the factory. even the 08s.. this includes the mustang 4.0 aswell you can use a better oil though... i run Mobil 1 full synthetic..

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that... the 4.0L motors in Explorers, Rangers, and Aerostars are one of the exceptions to the 5W20 recommendation. They recommend sticking with 5W30 on those motors.

The other exceptions are the 3.3L villager, 3.9L lincoln LS, 2.0L HP Zetec motor in the Focus SVT... There are several others as well... It's been a while since I saw an updated list though...

Yeah... that's what I was afraid of. I know I could get 5W20 in 5-liter bottles, but I have to buy 5W30 in individual bottles. They couldn't make it easy.

Since around midway thru last year I started using the Motorcraft Synthetic Blend.

this one is mainly for you bud,. these are pics i took of a motor job in progress of a 4.0 04* explorer at the ol' dealership. what your lookin at is the left side (facing the car) of the motor and the factory 820 filter on it....

Yes, I think we found how the same engine can have different filters, that adapter changed for 200?

The service manual on my 97 mountaineer specifies that the FL1A is the replacement filter.. i just got one from walmart and i'm starting to doubt if i did get the right one... based on that chart posted before, i should be using a FL 820S??

so, which is the right filter?
