Ok fellahs and femmes.......we've finally found the problem.......brought and installed a new solenoid.......turned key into on position and did the screwdriver thing on the solenoid and nothing but a click.....repeated this about 4 times and nothing but a click! I read the starter problem posts and it seems like one of the guys on there had the same problem i did and that is a corroded wire.....the smaller wire had to be cut back because of a new type of starter for the ford explorer and in doing this the corrosion was found. That small wire is turning greenish and dark brownish(almost black) in color. The people at the auto part store said this is definitley the problem because not enough power is getting to the starter. They told me that wire goes to the ignition switch or something like that! Fellahs i've come this far in my new auto maintenance journey......please take me all the way......we're close, very close......how in the heck do i replace that wire....is it hard or can i do it without turning the car into the mechanic......please help me! thanks!

small wire to starter comes from the starter solenoid (fender mounted)
The large wire goes directly to the + battery post.

replacing these two wires is simple.

You rip out the existing wires, takes a few minutes they are routed with other wires.
Diso the - battery cable
Start at the starter, unhook the wires and remove starter.
unhook the small wire from the starter solenoid
unhook the big wire from the battery, start pulling the wires out.

Once out you can rebuild a new harness to match.
I find all the wiring stuff I need (wire and terminals) at West Marine or Radio Shack, Home Depot, etc.

rebuild the harness, install your new harness, its pretty straight forward.
I solder everything and use heat shrink. I also choose to re-route my starter wiring, slightly diff from factory, keeping it further away from the exhaust.
I also use heat protector anywhere it does come close to the exhaust and conduit anytime the wires make a bend or are routed near a sharp edge.

Good luck!
