My 98 EB is leaking oil from passenger side axle seal. Anyone can give me a procedure to get it replaced? Can I just use hand tool to do it? Thanks!

Can anyone point a direction?

An added note on the wheel bearing for the axle. There is an off-set bearing with built-in seal that will ride on a better area of axle. I have had very good luck with this option. It will last as long as the first bearing and you will not need to buy new axles until the second bearing & seal fails. A good auto parts shop should carry it.

This is front passenger side. Thanks in advance!

The repair book says that the diffential is lubed for the life time of the truck for 1997 and beyond. I don't know why the fluid was fluhed 1n 2009. Now it starts leaking. What is the basis that the mechenics decide to change it despite that the repair book says it doesn't need to. By the way, the truck is 98 EB and it has 105K now. Two years ago it was 90K when the diffential fluid was flushed.

Do I need to do alignment after I complete this?

I see, is the seal just a little wet with a drop hanging on the underside of axle houseing or is it leaking to the point needing to add gear lube. If the lube is really running out, you my need more than just the seal replaced. I would ask around to find a good with the correct tools and know how to do it right. I have an 00 XLT and it has been wet for a long time. I have only added lub just resently before going on a 3,300 mile round trip. I have 159K & not planning on fixing it in the near future. My near future is pulling the engine for a complete timing replacement. Lubed for life only means, you never have to flush and replace when not requireing a repair.

Thanks for the detailed description. Currently it is only wet underside the axle houseing. I will monitor it closely.

The shop did the flush two years ago without any needs for repair. And I didn't know much about it at that time.

Many of us don't believe that there is any such thing as "lifetime" lubrication in a vehicle. I changed mine at 238K when the diff started to make a little noise.
