Plasti Dipped Wheels

My friend and I plastidipped the chrome pieces of his rig with the use of adhesion promoter. No need to scuff the chrome surface. The adhesion promoter helps PD to stick really hard.

Thinking about doing this to my wheels. Does plasti dip last long? I live in Indiana and we have lots of salt on the roads in the winter.

thanks

I plan on doing this as well; never used the stuff. Do you recommend removing your wheels to get at all angles, or leave the wheel on and just tape off the tire and spray away?

remove the wheels. plastidip is ghetto in itself, don't make it worse by having your brakes all plastidipped too, and your lug nuts so the plastidip gets all chewed up the first time you rotate tires.

remove, mask the back side, and use index cards around the perimeter by the tire so you can remove the cards after each coat. If you leave it taped and let it dry after a few coats it will peel up easily along the masking line. index cards is a good trick so you can easily pop them out after each coat so it doesn't dry along the mask line. Do several coats, and practice on something first. Thin coats, but several of them to build up the thickness. The thicker it is, the easier it will remove when you want to remove it.

thanks for the tips Harley

I did the first wheel by removing it and it was by far much harder and the results were worse. When you tighten the lugs (after dipping) they grab the dip and pull it off (behind the lug). I ended up removing the plasti dip and starting I've with the wheels on.

If you had a clue Harley, you would know that dipping with the wheel on does not get any dip on the brake or rotor because they are masked with plastic bags. And the lugs will come off just fine if dipped with the wheels on.

I don't really care what you think, but I don't think my ride looks ghetto at all...

Don't even tape off the tire, in fact spray the tire with a nice, full, even coat and it'll peel right off. Check out the dipyourcar channel on YouTube.

I did come across the those videos last night; very helpful and very easy. Now the problem is just finding the stuff here in Germany since so far most places stateside wont ship to me (or without incurring rid shipping charges). Can't wait to try.

If you "had a clue", you would have masked the seats that the lugs sit on so it wouldn't grab the dip and tear lol.

But you're right, most paint shops just shove plastic bags in your wheels, and paint right over lug nuts, tires, and everything else when you get parts on yoru car repainted, because doing it the half azz way isn't ghetto at all lol :salute:

Funny... 1 person talking plasti-dip and the other talking paint shops.
I don't think y'all are on the same page.

Obviously the first guy doesn't want a paint shop quality job or he wouldn't be plasti-dipping in the first place.

With plasti-dip, do it the quickest and easiest way, that's the whole idea.
If you want a high quality job, take off the wheels and get them powder coated.

Ya because having aluminum showing around the lug nut isn't ghetto? Dipping with the lug on still allows the lug to come off just like normal. Its not the half ass way, its the way most people do it. FYI paint shops don't use plasti dip, clown.

I don't take my wheels off. Just mask the rotors and spray on the tire, it's easier to peel the dip from the tire. The quality of the paint job will be based on the painter. Not one person thinks I painted my wheels myself, they all think it was powder coated. Temperature is probably the most important thing with PlastiDip, just a hair too cold and you'll end up with texture.

you're right, the goal of plastidip isn't to have a blacked out look for cheap, it's to have a blacked out look for cheap that looks cheap too.:salute:

I've seen it done both ways. Parts masked correctly, and painted with a little extra effort, and it can be difficult to tell if it's plastidip or actual paint/powder. Parts half azzed and just sprayed with no other effort, you can definitely tell it's PD. At that point, may be easier to paint it on with a roller if you give a rats azz how it looks

I've actually done my wheels both ways, you have obviously not. Masking anything other than the brakes/rotors is unecessary and just gives the stuff a place to start peeling. FYI, it's not paint ...

You're right I haven't done it both ways, I don't do things the half azz way lol

I feel like I'm talking to a wall here. You have seemingly no experience using Plasti Dip on wheels, but are an expert? If you don't like something thats fine, its not for everyone, but to throw words out like cheap and half-assed when you are ignorant on the subject is beyond ridiculous.

Also, using "lol" is the epitome of half-assed.

Plastidipped wheels - FAAAIIL...wonk wonk wonk

Well, not so much the plastidip process itself but my wife hates them. She thinks they look stolen or are "missing pieces". Oh well, at least it was a cheap experiment. These are the stock 20" rims. What do you guys think?

Doesn't look to bad. How long has it been on there? Does it have that washed out look to it yet?

Just the first day with these. I actually thought they already came out a little matted. First coat had a decent shine to it so I thought that would be the end result.

Usually you spray it in layers. When I used it, it would be 5 layers. You spray a layer (which looks like crap), wait 15 minutes, spray another layer, wait 15 minutes, and so on. The plastidip will start looking smooth about the 5th layer.

Mine just had that faded look after awhile of being on the car.
