Are there any threads with tips to pulling a 5.0 out of an Explorer? I searched a little, but couldn't come up with anything.

what do you need to know? I have pulled and installed a few, see my signature

Cool, well I'm just planning things right now... possibly pulling the engine next weekend. But I do have a few questions after reading through the Haynes manual.

Do the power steering pump and A/C compressor really need to be removed?
Other then the coolant and engine oil, do any other fluids need draining?
Where does the hoist attach on 5.0? Upper intake bolt?

remove both front accessory brackets, yes, take the front of the engine down to the timing cover/water pump, remove the fan and all accessories

The hoist hooks to many different places, I choose to use the engine mount plate bolts

Drain all fluids, A/C, coolant, oil, power steering, and fuel from the rail and lines

So I don't need to drain the torque converter or transmission?

are you pulling the transmission too?, if so then yes

if no then you will lose a bit of ATF when you pull the radiator because the auto trans cooler lines run to it, other then that no you dont need to drain the converter or transmission.... normally I would drain the converter at this point even if not pulling the trans but our 5.0L trucks have a converter drain so fluid change is possible with the engine in place

All true, you can just undo the bolts to the tranny and the converter bolts push the converter back closer to the trans and then support the tranny with a jack so it doesn't pitch forward.

A few more dumb questions.

Do I need to remove parts of the dash to pull the engine? I'm pretty sure I read that either on the board here, or in my Haynes manual.. but hopefully I misread.

Any trouble pulling with Torque Monster headers still attached?

After I pull the engine, is it going to be possible to tie the transmission up so that the truck can be rolled out of the way? Or once the engines pulled am I just going to have to leave a jackstand holding the transmission up (making the truck immobile)?

You might try a strap for the tramsmission, lay a 2x4 on top of the trans hump inside the truck and strap around it maybe, running the strap up thru the access panel under the console

I would remove the headers first.

you have to remove the center console, but its not that difficult try search

Oh center console...to get to the hatch? Yea, that's a piece of cake.. as long as it's not the entire dash.

to access the top 4 bellhousing bolts, or at least 2 of them... and the 3 02 sensor plugs you must go through the floor/center console

You can pull the carpet back or simply cut it down the middle like I do

A/C condenser, should I remove that with the radiator or leave it in place?

Do I need to set TDC before removing? If not, when do I need to do that?

Thanks

(I'm getting a little excited about removing the engine now, picking up an engine hoist later today)

Well it's out.

The only trouble we really had was figuring out where to hook the hoist too. In the end, we got it wrong. The engine came up and flipped around... royal pain in the ass. I'm going to have to find a proper mount plate when (if) putting it back in. Other then that, it wasn't bad at all.

I did end up taking the condenser out, and the TM headers had to come off to get to the engine mount bolts.

Crankshaft is replaced, putting motor back in. Transmission is bolted up, but I have this piece left over that was in my "transmission bolt baggy", but I'm not sure where it went. Any ideas? I looks like some sort of bracket, maybe for the O2 sensor that's dropping down the side.... but I can't seem to figure out how it bolts on.

Hmm.. doesn't want to line up with anything.. oh well.

Main battery ground wire, does that ground to the water pump cover? Or .. somewhere else?..

I had planned on comparing things like this to my Mum's 98 5.0 Mountineer, but as it turns out, there are minor differences that are making that tricky.
