Hello,

i am planning to send my leaking rack and pinion to a shop for a rebuild and have it for spare.
So i cleaned it as good as possible, brushed the old paint and some rust away.
The 4 rubber bushings seems to be still ok but i would like to change them, but i have no clue how to get them out?
Trying to punch out the sleeves without success, is there any advice?

Thanks and regards!

If it’s gonna get rebuilt anyway, maybe burn them out?

I think @donalds did this job a while back?

No burning, I have replaced these. Use a socket and a hammer to hammer out the metal insert in center of bushing. After the insert is removed the bushing will fold and pop out. @wollimann

OR. use a balljoint press

I've used a large C-clamp, some wood blocks, and a dowel of appropriate diameter to get the bushings into and out of shock absorbers. I can't imagine that this would be too far different.

A press would be better, but you can make other things work.

Yes, c-clamp did work, but the sleeves were rusty and bushings were glued in.
Some effort to get these things out.

Wow that's a lot of corrosion. Mine was not that bad. Congrats on getting it out!

I usually just buy a reman rack and it comes w new bushings
Get a good one like carquest or Napa

29 years old and now leaking, not so bad i think.
I dont't want a other rebuilded one, will send this one
to a specialized shop.
It is definitely cheaper and if something will go wrong
the shop is in Germany, guarantee...
Unfortunately rack and pinions in Europe came without
bushings, still ordered new bushings in your lovely country!

regards to the USA!

Understood! My bad I did not see you were overseas

A simple bushing puller can be fabricated from all thread!

I also found this good method
