97 mercury mountaineer
I have a 97 mountaineer with the 5.0. I also have 3 mustang get motors of different performance levels laying around. Im interested in swapping in the 1.7 ratio rockers into my merc. Anything I need to know before tackling this project? Mustang magic of long island says they will bolt in bit they are unstheyabout push rod length

If you want to do it right, at very least you should check push rod length and adjust accordingly, or else you can end up with extra valve train noise, valve guide wear and valve stem wear.

1.7 rockers with 5/16 ped mount bolt right in with stock everything. The pain will be getting valve covers to fit. Then you need an intake spacer for some valve covers. Then the egr tube is too short and so on.

There aren't valve covers that will do the job with running into the intake?

Not really. Not to mention the oil fill and PCV vent need to be on the passenger side. Most tall covers have oil fill to the front driver side, and a whole at the rear passenger side that needs to be plugged.

I have used Mustang aluminum valve covers and I have used Ebay tig welded aluminum valve covers on 5.0 with roller rockers
You will have to modify the oil fill tube
The EGR tube can be made to reach with an intake spacer with some simple plumbing fittings available at hardware store

There's also an Edelbrock part for about $30 that makes the EGR fit directly. Hardware store would probably be cheaper, but if you wanted to just have something in hand to do the swap with and not fiddle around, it's an option.

Edit - it's part number 8025.

what advantage would this bring by adding roller rockers? Is the value worth the effort/results?

I run 1.6 ratio (stock) roller rockers but I also have a .512 lift cam. They supposedly add up to 20hp at 5000+ rpm because of the roller tip but I've never tested it. You go to 1.7 to add lift but keep the same cam profile. It will move the power band up though.

I wonder if you can 'massage' your current valve covers (I know for a fact you can with the 1.6 ratio roller rockers with a factory cam).
Getting the factory valve covers to work would sure save lots of misery.

Id love to add a Cam and rockers to mine, but pulling the motor right now is not an option. :(

Technically you don't -have- to pull the engine.

I did E303 cam and FMS 1.6 roller rockers with engine in the truck
Stock explorer valve covers can work you remove some baffles and grind a rocker or dent the cover a bit to clear, instead of messing with that we used the aluminum mustang units and then later on a 84 Ranger we built with a 370hp 302 we used the tall Ebay tig welded units and an intake spacer.......

Any recommendations on reliable 1.6 roller rockers?

Make sure you get pedestal mount! Does he need shims? Mine required some small shims under the pedestals if I remember correctly
