roof rack screw removal

Is there some secret to getting the Philip screws out of the outer rails on an Explorer roof rack.
I've tried to remove the on two different vehicles, and all I get are stripped screw heads.

A good screwdriver that doesn't slip.

Aren't those Torx heads? T25 maybe? ANY size Philips bit will probably strip them. Use RTV sealant on the threads when replacing.

They're Phillips , made out of cheese. It's Canadian so maybe they're metric Phillips

I've removed a few. You need a phillips bit that fits tightly into the slots, with no slop at all.
