Rubicon-Aug. 28-Sept. 1st.

Tom, thanks for your understanding. Make your plans for the next Rubicon trip as soon as possible. I sure hope we will see you at Truckhaven if not earlier.

Peter e-mailed me photos of your new dual shock setup, looks very nice. I guess Paul Bredehoft will be bringing his Explorer to 4x4doctor for some work.

Have a great trip!

Rick

Hey Rick!

I am shooting for a mid-October (Thanksgiving) run on the 'con. :smoke: You and anyone else are more than welcome to join me. :)

Paul,
You're saying mid October. That would be canadian Thanksgiving then, eh? ;)
It could be rainy and downright cold, especially at night, at that time of the year. The elevation there is up around 6000-7000 ft. I've run into frost and snow at Tahoe as early as September.
On the other hand, it could also be really great fall weather. Just be prepared.

Thanks for the warning Peter. But it could be cold and snowing here too. ;) I will dress warm though. :D

FYI elevation is over 4000 feet and the wheeling places close by are higher. We are at the foot of the Rockies here in Calgary. I have seen snow in Alberta in Every month except for August.

In all seriousness, cold weather is nothing to take lightly and if I am going to go I will be well prepared! Warm clothes, extra fuel, extra food, maybe even chains.

Hmmm... that's tempting, but this kid thinks it's freezing cold when it's below 75deg. That happens when you get used to 105+ temps for a couple months at a time.

Paul,
the end of the trail (where you come out at Lake Tahoe) is a few hundred feet above lake level and the lake is at about 6000 feet.
I don't think I have to tell you that chains won't do you any good on rocks.
By the way, if you like big, big parties, you need to go to Kitchener, Ont. (I lived there for 12 years) for Octoberfest. Starts first weekend in Oct. and goes to Thanksgiving. Second biggest beer bash after Munich. :D

Colin (Fenderguy),
I e-mailed you a couple days ago that Tom and I have booked motel reservations in Placerville for 8/28. I haven't heard back from you, so I don't know if you got the info. Thought we needed a good nights sleep before hitting the trail on Tuesday morning.
Anyway, we're staying at the Placerville Best Western.
8 days and counting :bounce::bounce:

Hi Guys, The time is drawing nearer. Colin or Winter give me a call this weekend at home so we can work out the details. I think we should travel in a caravan since we're all coming from So. Ca. Also think about reservations for Thursday night. Best place would be So. Lake Tahoe.
Winter are you taking your portable buzzall with you . I have an adapter we can plug it into.
Well guys I talked with Paul Yesterday and when we make it thru the Little Sluice we'll be the 3rd & 4th explorers to do it. But the first 2 running 35's.
5 DAYS AND A WAKE UP
Tom

Everybody,
today's the day. We're on our way to the Rubicon. I'm just sending off a last message while I'm waiting for Tom (FAKRWEE) to show up. Looks like there are are going to be just 3 rigs.
1. Tom - I'm riding with him, spotting and taking pictures.
2. Colin (Fenderguy) He's got Winter in the shotgun seat.
3. A Jeep. Haven't met the occupant(s) yet.
Hope we don't have any breakage on the trail and will report and post pictures as soon as available.
Everybody have a good time in Colorado. I was there last year and will miss being there. But I just couldn't pass up the Rubicon. :bounce:

Have a great time guys. I wish we could be with you! Be safe...

Anybody that's around checking the board.
We, meaning Tom (FAKRWEE), Colin (Fenderguy), Winter and myself, just got back (Friday, 5:00 pm PST) from conquering the Rubicon.
Pictures will be send in for developing tomorrow. Some kind of a trip report when I get the pictures back (slides, they take about 4 working days).
It was awesome. :D

Welcome Back !

Peter,
Welcome back! Hope everything went well. Can't wait to see the pictures. :)Did you guys do little sluce?

Alright
good to hear that you all got back and had a great time looking forward to the pics and write up

Hi Guys. We're back. 1st I want to thank the whole crew, Peter, Colin & Winter, without the teamwork & individual efforts we would still be up there. I broke a radius arm, Again, but it just became an experience instead of a problem. Wait until you hear the story of the trail fix. I also had to do one of the sluices in 2 wheel drive when I broke the radius arm, that was an experience in it's self.
But I don't want to get ahead. You'll get the whole story as the pictures get in.
Tom

Glad to hear you guys had a good time. I sure wish I could have made it.

Sorry to hear about your radius arm Tom. Was it a Superlift? I'm sure looking forward to seeing the photos and reading the trip report.

How long did it take? 2 days, or longer because of the breakage?

Tom is going on the road again on business, so I'll be working on a trip report. Due to the volume of business because of labor day, my slides won't be back from the lab until the weekend. I'll post the report and pictures at the same time.
Tom brought his video camera, so we have some footage too. We previewed it Thursday in our motel room and I think there are a few interesting segments.
I now have attended last years Colorado Colors Run, then Truckhaven and Moab this year. I have to say, none of these runs were comparable to the Rubicon. Here it's like playing chess or billiards. You can't just think of the current move, you need to consider the next one or two to avoid getting all crossed up by picking the wrong line at the beginning.
I hope I wetted everybody's appetite. Details coming soon in the trip report.
