so my bumpers are covered w/ rust...i know how i want to prevent rust (i'm planning on getting them proffesionally coated with three to four coats of truck bed liner) but i have to get rid of the current rust first...now i don't have a grinder or a welder but someone suggested sandblasting them...i have no clue at all about sandblasting does it really get rid of rust and how much does a sandblasting job cost?

Call around locally, its not much. And yes it will get rid of rust and leave you with a satin, medium gray piece of steel.

also, get them to coat it with epoxy, or make sure you do it as soon as you get them. the metal becomes very porous after it is sand blasted, and will start getting surface rust soon if the metal it not treated.

Try this..
Make a ball out of alum foil...
Dip into some Coke...
Then rub the foil ball onto the bumber and watch the rust disapier..
Then wash off the coke and then wax or get them ready for coating..
Worth a try and cheaper

Not sure thats going to do much against rust -- it would probably be the same as using hydrogen peroxide.

Depending upon the amount and depth of rust, you might be able to clean it up via DIY. Look for Norton BearTex or 3M scotchbrite wheels or discs. Black are generally quite coarse, maroon are usually medium. Some are made to fit on a drill, but if you have an angle grinder you can find something better. If the rust is deep you can start with black and then finish with the maroon. If it is to be re-chromed, it will eventually need to be buffed to a fairly fine finish.

The aluminum foil -Coca cola thing works very well. Try it, what do you have to loose.
Well now I'm interested to see some results :) -- who wants to contact Mythbusters?
