Shift Kit/Enhancer Installed

it was in the right location... its just if you noticed, ours is "upside down" as far as the numbers, so take that into account if you get confused on which wires to use.

I bought one of these today, but am nervous that it is the GM part they make for pickups and such instead of the proper one. I took it out of the package and it says "GM" embossed into the plastic module. Is this correct ? Also, I have a 1997 Eddie Bauer with the 5.0, where is the ECM ? I didn't see it close to the main fuse box under the hood as B&M described. Thanks

You need the Ford one I believe.

yea, i dunno bout puttin a GM one on there. Yours should at least say ford on it. Mine said it was for a 96 5.0 Explorer, so i dunno bout a GM one. Basically, any ford one will work. Also, my hookup is on the firwall at the top near the hood on the passenger side. It said like EEC-Iv on it, that is my computer...good luck

ya i think you're ok if the box says ford on it, mine did.... but yours says GM. I'd return it for the ford one.

I just looked on the side of my door to see what my "Trans" code was, and mine is a T. I called summit and asked em about it, and they said same thing you guys did, it would work on all the trans codes that were listed earlier. But he did say it worked for 95-97. Now will it work on mine cause its a 95-95 (me 95) even though the trans code doesn't match. And if not is there anything I can do. I'm pretty bummed, seems just about everything I try to do, I have an odd ball EX.

Klowns,
You may have an A4LD instead of the 4R55E. You need to know if your tranny is vacuum modulated or totally electronic. If it's the older A4LD, then you can use the shift improver for a 91-94.

Thanks for the quick response Alec.

I did actually call my ford dealership I use, and they confirmed through a VIN check, that I do have the A4LD.
Whether or not its the vaccuum thing you're talking about I dunno, but I assume that's what the A4LD is. And what's the difference, and is it bad?

So what do I do know Alec? or anyone.

Like I said, BM has a similar kit for the A4LD. I found it for you:

Sorry didn't see that, thank you for finding it for me, and that in turn is the same thing that the other one is? just made for this type of tranny I guess. Thanks again, now I just have to find out where to order it,unless it says where on there, didn't really look.

Thanks

Summit wasn't sure if they had, so says the guy, (stupid), he did say it was in the catalog, but he had absolutely no information at all.

Basically the older one is vacuum controlled, and the newer one is electronic. They essentially do the same thing and install similarly.

Well I just went to Loper's and picked up the Vacuum controlled one for my A4LD. Has anyone put one of these in on the A4LD's?

I've been following this thread, and i still have a question. Well two. The problem i have is that when i step on it, it downshifts once, and then it takes like a good 3 sec to shift again????? This this quicken these shifts??????? OR just make them stronger when they do occur???? And, could we just not mount the part that get's hot somewhere under the hood, where's there's airflow to keep it cool????? Or is these piece vunerable to dirt? stones, water? Thanks.

cantspell,

Firstly: the first shift is your torque converter unlocking, and the second is the actual downshift. This unit may or may not make the tranny downshift at a better time, but will firm up the shift when it does.

As for the mounting, the hot part of the unit is very close to the controller unit, and they're pre-wired. So the resistor unit needs to be inside the vehicle by default.

ok, so why can't we just splice more lenght into the wires???? And does anyone know if it speeds up the tiem to shift?????????? (i've realized that with a 5speed auto, it's a little more difficutl to feel teh shifts, but that second down shift, at least when at highway speeds, take a loooong time to come...will this help????)

The electronic shift improver works by changing the current the computer sends to the tranny. It does this with a specific length of wire and resistors. Adding more or taking away wire will change the signal, either amplifying or subtracting from the effect of the unit. I'd just leave it be in terms of it's construction.

It terms of shift points and promptness, best way to do that is with a chip.

It doesn't get THAT hot, mine is tucked under the carpet.

By the way, how much would a tranny rebuild with the addition of a shift kit put in cost for my tranny? Its starting to go to crap i think. When it downshifts while slowing down, it slips and revs up between the shifts.

I think the torque converter is what causes this next thing... but when in the middle of a gear at WOT, around 3000 rpms, it drops maybe 500 rpms and then continues to climb up.

Sound like its going bad?

It also revs kinda high and takes a second to shift from park to drive, like if i shift to drive, and then step on it half a second later, it will rev up before drive catches.
