Thank you for the input, however, 86PR knows about autos, I, to reiterate, was speaking in general terms, nothing specific. I'm not concerned about what the problem is because 86PR can handle that... we were speaking about the quality of Autolites... and there is nothing I can do except to say that the spark plugs are excellent quality based on my recent experience with them...

I have tried starting fluid before, and carb cleaner. Hasn't made any difference. I wasnt able to get anywhere with that. However you did bring up a good point I know that when I move the throttle i am getting fuel in the carb. Could it be a problem inside the carb? I can see fuel going into it. It is only a few months old tho. Its a Holly Carb 2 barrell.

Choke and everything works? I mean...You have air, you have fuel....how did you check for spark? At the end of the plug or did you pull a plug and watch it fire? I dunno how to check to make sure the cap/rotor are in correct position for timing. Again I dunno that much about carbs. Maybe take a step back, check every plug wire and make sure you have good spark at all cyls, check all plugs make sure they have proper gap and are clean of crud. Take the carb off and clean it out, make sure the gaskets are good and it's adjusted properly.....When you sprayed in carb cleaner did it fire up or do the same thing? If it did the same thing then it has to be timing or spark because there is gas/air....

86 Also when I had my bike if I didn't have the idle screw turned in enough it wouldn't start, if I twisted the throttle it would start but not just cranking...might be something else to look at.

I checked spark by removing each plug and watching them fire. I'm not sure if thats the best way or not but they all seemed to have spark. This weekend I'll pull the carb off clean it, etc. Also I'll try to adjust the timing. A mechanical friend told me all i really have to do is adjust the distributer an 8th of a turn to retard the timing. Sound right? I really never did this before so I'm winging it. He said with an 8th of a turn it would be a way to check the timing chain. And if that didnt do anything turn it an 8th of a turn the opposite way. Sort of a trial and error process? I'm not really sure. any thoughts there?

Thanks for the compliments. The Ranger isn't much to look at but it's a good toy to have, when it cooperates with me! It sounds mean too! But there's a few fords here, My ranger of course, an 03 Excursion, and not pictured but I also have a Focus SVT. The escape you see is belongs to a buddy. I was messing with the truck tonight for a while. On the ranger I found a loose ground wire and re-wired that hoping it was the problem. Not the case, nothing is ever that easy. however I am starting to think my problem is fuel related. When the truck stopped running a while ago and i was trying to figure out the problem I definatly DID have fuel going into the carb. I rechecked this and I no longer have fuel running thru my lines. Can a filter, or possibly a pump go bad just by sitting? I hate to think so but i have a feeling I am farther away from getting this truck running then i thought. I pulled the line off and pumped the throttle, no fuel. Clogged filter maybe? or possibly the pump? It is an electric pump, maybe the pump wires went bad after muddin? any thoughts?

Wow! Well, when my fuel pump went out, the vehicle shut down completely. But that was a tremendous expense (labor). How much is it to get another fuel filter? Did you inspect the one that's on their now?

does that model have an fuel pump inertia cutoff switch?
how about a fuel pump relay, or fuel pump fuse?
