my 01 sport shuts down at 100 mph! does anyone know how to bypass this?

The limiter can be removed, by getting the PCM re flashed but you don't want to. The limiter is there for a reason, The drive shafts, U joints, half shafts, etc are not designed to handle speeds excess of 100MPH. Tires also have speed ratings and can blowout. Then add Rollovers on top of that, its just not worth it IMO.

an x-cal 2 from hensonperformance.com will take care of you. I've had my mounty up aroud 126 or so, and it was smooth as silk, but I only stayed up there for a few miles then slowed it back down to 80

It was on I-70 between Topeka and Manhattan. It was 1:30 am and there was no other traffic in sight. I'm pretty sure my tires probably aren't rated up to that, but everything I've heard is that as long as your not above the rated speed for to long it's not normally a problem, since the tires don't have enough time to heat up

Vehicles are speed-limited for a reason: The components are not designed to sustain speeds in excess of their rated speeds. Unless you know something the engineers that designed, tested, and built you vehicle don't know, I would not suggest exceeding the factory limits. Additionally, your tires must be up to the task... Exceeding the tire's speed rating for any amount of time is asking for trouble.

I can remove your limiter with tuning. The tuning can be loaded on ole reliable ExCal2, X3 or even a Livewire. Generally speed limiters are imposed because of the speed rating on the tires.-j

If the engineers decided it shouldn't ever go that fast then why a speed limiter, why not take some gear out of transmission? Or something else to truly stop it from going that fast.

Some vehicles are, in fact, gearing-limited. But there are a whole lot of other things to consider. Engine speed during normal operating conditions would be affected, which would, of course, affect fuel economy for the worse. Also, there's things like driveline harmonics to take into consideration. Besides, even if they did that, anyone that wants to work around it could just install taller gearing in the diff. Where there's a will, there's a way. I mean, the Mythbusters made an Impala go nearly 300 mph, right?

I don't see any point for going past 100MPH in an explorer. I agree with pretty much everyone else that you shouldn't exceed what the engineers put in place. If you do go past those limits, at least do it on a track away from other drivers. It's your truck and you can do what ever you want. But....I can't stand people that wiz down the expressway like it's nascar. No offense (if you are one of these), but it's irresponsible, stupid, and Dangerous. Keep it on the track for speeds that fast.

Mine tops out at 107 according to my GPS unit before it got stolen I got bored driving home from school on I-84 when nobody else was on the road, didn't know at first why my truck just stopped accelerating and then I remembered and felt quite embarrassed. I'm not going to bother tweaking it because I know if I did, I'd push it too far one day and cause a big mess that nobody wants to deal with.

I agree it's pretty stupid to go much over 100mph, mine feels fine at those speeds, but that doesn't mean there isn't something going on that I don't know about. I normally don't go much over 85 or so. I just really needed to clear my head that night, and I wanted to see what she would do, and it raced right up there. Also I think one of the reasons the limit is 107 is thats when 3rd gear runs out, and it has to shift to overdrive.

The first overdrives shift out of 4th gear at WOT. My Mark VII had no limiter, but 3rd gear would only go to about 130(pegged). These updated AOD's evidently will hold 4th gear at WOT. The A4LD and 5R55E shouldn't, that's a lot of stress on the overdrive band.

Weird. My governer kicks in around 115 for my '01 sport. Weird noise comes with it too. Anyone care to explain exactly what happens while the governer is in action? Always wondered myself
