This morning when I went out to start my 99 Explorer to go to work, it will not turn over. The only way it will is if I step on the gas, then it will shut off as soon as I let off the pedal. This strikes me as weird, because it's Fuel Injected, I know this was a nice trick for cold carbureted motors. Can anyone tell me why this is so? I hear the fuel pump turn on and everything, systems are nominal. It just started acting up today, last night when I drove it it was fine. Any help is appreciated.

Hmmm, you say "it won't turn over", but then say "it will shut off as soon as I let off the pedal".

Do you mean it will turn over but not start until you give it gas, and then it runs until you let off the gas? If so, I'd suspect the IAC valve. It controls airflow at idle and on startup, and they're a known issue.

Guys can you please help me? I really need help with this situation... it's killing me and I need my explorer to run!

Answer JDraper's question. Your initial post doesn't make much sense. What do you mean when you say "it won't turn over", then say "it will shut off as soon as I let off the pedal".

Does it turn over or not? Does it start and not idle?

We do need more info. If it is cranking, check the vacuum lines.

the way i understand is that you have to apply the gas in order for it to turn over and then if you let off the gas it will die..im suspecting the IAC..try cleaning it out with some intake cleaner you can get from the store..do a search on the forum regarding the IAC..mine did the same thing..cleaned it out but still had issues..got a new IAC and it was fixed no prob..its an easy fix..

Yes, that's right I do have to apply the gas in order to get it to start, and when I let off it dies, and yes it cranks real good. The starter sounds very strong. Where is the IAC located?

try disconnecting the MAF sensor, leave disconnected, then try starting truck.
See if it starts and runs pretty well with it disconnected.

This will set a code you will have to clear by disconnecting battery for awhile.

I had the same problem. Replaced the IAC for 45 bux, porblem went away!
if its the SOHC, its the valve right abve the upper intake manafold below the "splash guard" cant miss it, it has 2 screws and it looks like a tube.
Like this. and i have a question myself. My new IAC is like the one in this picutre, but the stock one the part that plugs into the wires was on the side, not the top.. it fit right, works right. but it poked a hole in my fire thing on the hood.

Is it normal for it to just go bad over night??

I agree completly. Same thing with my blend door. One minute it worked, the next. cold air. Let us know how its running? If its the IAC or what. When mine went bad, it didnt throw a code, so dont think its not that for not throwing a code.

Guys I really appreciate your help, the Dealer was the only one with an IAC, and payed WAY more than I wanted to... $137 and some change after taxes... it as hard to swallow but I needed it like ASAP. After installing it, it started right up like it never had any previous issues. The old one was really dirty. Just like the guy behind the counter said it probably was. All carboned up. He said cleaning it wouldn't be worthwhile, it would only temporarily fix it, and the rubber piece inside probably would be dry rotted. Which was also true. Thanks again!

I am having a similar problem. When starting my car I get the click you all are talking about but my instrument cluster is also flashing when I try starting the vehicle. Anyone know what the problem can be? CMAX~
