My throttle was beginning to stick intermittently. I couldn't figure out where the bind was coming from for quite awhile and I was REALLY sick of having it stick at the most inoportune times. One day last week I was checking out the cable again and I put a little pressure on the cable where it enters the firwall. The thing just cracked and out poured powdered rust!

The cable has a rubber sheath over the back half and water must get trappped under it rusting the cable.

I ordered a new cable, found out none of the dealers stock the part so it took a week and a half to arrive. Today I swapped it out. When I slid back the rubber sheath on the old cable I was surprised at how much damage there was under there.

This may be something to check on your older Explorers since I live in a dry climate, I'm sure some who live in wet climates will have the same problem. It's a good thing to catch before you have a problem.

crap, i better check this out, back in 2001, i drove my truck from april to december with no hood or fender...... and now, its been sitting under a tarp in the elemnts for the past year without a roof!

Mine just started to get a little sticky a few days ago. I'll have to check it out. What part are you talking about cracking? The cable or the sheath?

One more damn thing...

It's under the rubber sheath. Not the cable itself that pulls, but rather the housing around it.

Thats what your hand throttle is for. :) j/k Although I do like using mine sometimes instead of the pedal.

I will check mine out during its re-build here.
