Texas Slab Run

Hi,
I was reading the post and I was wondering if I was late to join you guys on this run. Camping would be a plus for me, keep the cost down. I have a 93 XLT with 31's, no lift, would I be ok? Can the family come? I have a little experience off-roading, I mean, I've been stuck more than three times. Last time I drove the truck into window high water.http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif I promised the wife I would not do that again.http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

I guess if the date is set for Oct. 14 and 15, I'm in. Can I bring my Samurai or will my Explorer do? Is the run too strenous? I mean, I really don't want to get starnded in Austin at this moment.
I will certainly camp. This will give me a great chance to get to know you all.

Pedro,
Everyone is welcome to come! Looks like with the weather change we will be camping as well. I'd recommend bringing your Explorer, so you can see what that bad boy can actually do. :)
Talk to you soon to make more plans,
Rod

The place where we are going to camp is it safe to leave my 2wd explorer there while we are out wheeling? If so i will camp in the truck and wheel with someone, since yall dont want to bring the two wheel drives out there.

Brian,

Hey you can bring you rig out there, its totally safe.
This place is unforgiving on 2wd's, its not thay we have a thing against them or anything, that sand just sucks you up faster then you can say Hootus.
So join us for a great time.
Rod

So its safe to leave it where we are camping and nooone will mess with it or steal it. Who all will be camping right there ???

Please provide directions. Will we meet at the canp site? I know how to get to Austin, so that is not a problem. Oh yes, I will bring the Explorer, but it's no monster!!!

Okay! Myself and a couple of friends are going to cruz there from dallas. What channel will everyone be tuned into? We will need to jump in with someone during the wheeling. Still need to know that my truck will not get messed with sitting at our campsite. Directions?

There are directions to the Slabs on a web page I made, the link to it is on page 2 of this thread. You basically go to Georgtown, Texas on I35 and from I35 you get off at 1431 and head down 1431 going West for about 40 minutes. Take a left at a road and that's the Slabs. I will make a map today and a page with better directions.

I will be camping if the weather stays good.

Brian I cannot promise that your truck will not get screwed with. If you plan on camping and leaving your truck at the entrance over night I would be weary of doing so.

I have to talk to Rod but I believe we will be camping at the watering hole were we go swimming. If we are then we could probably get your truck there Brian but not over the huge sand dune. So your truck would be just be about 40 meters from our campsite. Would be safe there.

With the Slabs you have a choice. If you want to go easy the Slabs offers an easy route. If you want to go hard there is plenty of that too. I've seen some wild pictures out there.

Rod recently went out there without me so he knows what is back there. Rod do you think we can make 2 days out of the Slabs? I was thinking of getting there Saturday night and wheeling to the camping spot, then wake up Sunday and going the rest of the way?

We always run on Channel 4.

I think your ride will be fine Brian, we are camping down river away from where everyone wheels. This place does not get packed, and most of the people are older that go out there, not little troublemakers.
If you like fishing bring you rod and reels for some night fishing there is a hole where we are camping with some good size catfish.
There are trails range from water crossings, rockcrawling, hill climbs, deep sand. Lots of options for everyone.

Directions are listed on our site along with pictures:
http://www.texplorers.rockcrawler.com/slabs/
What we will probably do is all meet up at my house, in Round Rock, which is 20 miles north of Austin on I35, then head out from there.

looks Like I will be there.

I am going to be Joining ya'll for the Slabs run on Saturday. But I will not be spending the night at the Camp site cause I did make plans to spend time with some of my Friends in Austin on Sunday.

Slabs Run Update

Everyone on the TEXplorers mailing list should of received this, but just in case, here it is again.

OK, here are the plans so far, we will be meeting at my house between 8:30 and
9am on Saturday Oct.14.
Email me and I will send you directions: kwalkins@austin.rr.com

Go to http://maps.yahoo.com/py/ddResults.py , there you can enter in your
address and my address and it should give you detailed directions on how to
get here.
We are gonna have a mini-potluck Saturday night, so we need to decide who wants to bring
what. For example hamburgers, buns, etc. If anyone has a little BBQ pit,
definetly bring that along.
Keith has a small poker table that he is bringing along, if anyone else has
a small table that would be great.

The plan so far is to leave the Austin area about noon, get there about
1:30, work our way to the campsite, which should take us about hour or so,
set up camp, then go scout out some of the trails that afternoon. And of
course BBQ'ing later that night.
Sunday.....wheeling all day until everyone want to go home.
Ohh yaa, almost forgot, if people are interested we are gonna take a night run Saturday.
Where we are camping there is a nice, clean, swimming hole and waterfalls so bring your
swimsuits.
Also for the fishing enthusiasts, there are plenty of places to throw a line
out and maybe get lucky.

Well I think thats all for know, anyone please chime in if you have any
ideas.

Thanks,
Rod and Keith

I'm trying to make it; will know early next week if I can.

However, it looks like there won't be much wheelin' Saturday. Leaving "about noon" probably will really mean by one or so, right? Just being realistic - someone is going to be late or need to go to get supplies at the local store, etc. Then we go out there, then set up camp, then etc etc. And Kris can only stay for Saturday, and I'll have to leave midday Sunday to get back to Dallas.

It would be hard for me to justify making a 500+ mile roundtrip and burn a few tanks of fuel and spend the weekend traveling across the state just to wheel Sunday morning.

Could you bump it up to say 9am-10am? I may be spending Friday night in Waco with an old college buddy but if that doesn't work out, if someone will give me a floor to sleep on Friday nite I can get up and cook a monster set of breakfast burritos (with all the fixins) to get us started off right. Then people like Kris and I could actually spend some time wheeling and not be under any time pressure.

Just an option for further thought. I may not make it, so no one needs to pay attention to me unless they like the idea anyway also.

PS/ for the campout I've got full gear, two burner Coleman stove, lantern, etc.

Gerald,

I would not mind getting up earlier. I plan to work the Opening Shift at work on Friday so I can have the weekend off...

so that would be fine with me.

Sounds like a plan then. I have no prob. w/ it! I think in order to make this thing perfect we need to assign certain grocery items for someone to bring. As far as for our dinner on saturday night and breakfast sunday morning. That way we all dont bring eggs and noone brings sausage or bacon. What do you think? Assign me with whatever and I will have it. Or we can just all end up bringing the same thing. What do you think?.

Sounds Good :)

Gerald,
Leaving early is fine with me! Kelly will be in Vegas so if you drive up on
Friday, you can stay in the spare bedroom. Or if you decide to drive up
with the rest of the guys Saturday morning, thats cool too.

Can everyone make it to Austin by 9 am Saturday?

I'll let Rod assign.
We going to do hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and cookies?
Looks like we have Kris, Brian, myself, Rod, Martinez, Jason, and Keach coming for sure so assign it to those people. Michael from this board is coming and I think riding with jason and Keach from SA but he will be in a non-Explorer. Rob might come I saw if he can get someone to run a show for him and not sure about Gerald.

I have a card table, latern, and I think a stove but I have to check with my Dad to see if it still works.

Can everyone post to let me know who all they will have in there vehicles. I need to know since I will be taging along with someone and A friend is riding down there with me. If need be we can tumble around in the cargo area, or I will just take the chance and redneck it in my 2wd :)

Nope no 2wd's
Me and Rod had just about the worst day in history there with a 2wd.
I don't know who all is coming with me since I am young and all my friends work on weekends. I will post as soon as I find out.
