..From the official website..

The General Tire Mint 400 is the oldest, roughest, most spectacular off-road race in North America! It was started in 1967, and is steeped in American lore, as thousands of racers and celebrities from around the world have attempted to tame the brutal Nevada desert.

With over 300 race teams, 20 classes of vehicles, and more than 20 thousand spectators…The Mint 400 is currently the biggest off-road race in the world!

Now owned by The Martelli Brothers, The Mint 400 is part of the Best in The Desert Off-Road Championship.

..Do we have any attendees this year or will anybody be in Vegas during the week of the 20th thru the 24th..?

..A preview of things to come...

..Hoping to arrive Friday by noon if not on Thursday eve..Depends on my work load...:burnout:

..Oh yea...Congrats Brandie Rounds..First of ten Finalists for the 2013 General Tire Miss Mint 400...

brandie-rounds-miss-mint-400.jpg

..And there will be a "Vintage Show and Shine" of past race cars and a parade...:shifty_ey ..Several of these past race cars will be racing again this year and next as they are bringing them back to life...:biggthump

..Have you downloaded 2013_Mint_400_with_Dangers.usr yet?

..Curious but that sounds like it might have some possibilities...:D

..Similar to KOH, this will also be broadcast live..;)

The Mint 400 will be covered LIVE on the largest off-road racing website in the world - Race-Dezert.com “RDC” will be feature unprecedented coverage of the Mint 400 including up-to-the-minute photos, stories, videos and live streaming video.

Additionally – because of generous support from title sponsor General Tire and supporting sponsor Polaris, this year’s television coverage of The Mint 400 will be expanded to a special two-hour show on the SPEED channel – to be broadcast early June to 78 million homes. Local and National radio shows will also be covering the event, including national radio show SpeedFreaks.

...And hopefully we will be able to add some updates and highlights ourselves from Friday and Saturday depending on how crazy it gets..

...Where are the "With Dangers" spots...

..Sounds like the places we want to be unless they mean Media are used as speed bumps or are stackable like rocks in this area..:p:

I might head down to contingency for a bit on Friday but not going to be gong to spectate. Would rather stay home and work on the expo to make up for lost time due to my welder going down over this past weekend.

..Sounds like the places we want to be unless they mean Media are used as speed bumps or are stackable like rocks in this area..:p:

Most of them are transitions between dirt and pavement, road crossings, places where the course comes together (wrong ways), sharp turns and then a few I couldnt figure out.

Do you guys have media passes or what? Are you looking for the best spectator section or best part of the course to be on in general? Let me know cause I can give you some decent ideas where to be. It's kinda like my backyard and I just raced quite a bit of that course with another series about 7 weeks ago myself behind the drivers wheel...

For instance, these two spots are fairly close to each other and are part of the mint course from what I can tell on the maps I've seen. This would be media only access I believe though unless you snuck in past the blm.

(yes, that's me driving...)

Whoops, I take that back... Just pulled the map up again that I saw and I don't think that spot in the first picture is being used but the 2nd picture is for sure. Do you guys have a map laid over an actual sat. image by chance?

If you're bound to the actual spectator areas. Spec #3 is a waste, don't bother. Spec 1 will be "okay" at best... Spec 2 is totally new and in a gravel pit that I've never actually been in. Could be epic, might be lame... Hard to say. Spec 4 won't be a let down though.

This is Spec 4 but the Mint will be running it the opposite way.

My race partner in his first race ever with only about 4 hours total time in the truck ever making the pass for the lead in our class at the 7 minute mark. LOL I wasn't in the truck at that point.

...Yes. yes. And all current info is appreciated as the desert and the tracks are always changing...:biggthump

Okay, if you guys have a media pass and aren't stuck with the 4 spectator spots then hopefully this works... I'll try to go in order around the course...

Access would be a bit of a pain and you'd possibly actually have hike in from spectator 1 but go about another 1/2-1 mile or so past spectator 1 towards the gravel pits and it's HUGE waist to chest deep type rollers/whoops in there mixed with square edged old broken asphaut! It's flat out BRUTAL in our truck! I've always wondered how fast and gnarly the TT's run that section! If you can get in there it wouldn't be a disappointment and honestly is probably one of the best spots you could find!

The section up at like mile 12 right after they cross the road and head up into that canyon. It's going to be a slower section but is technical and rough! It's really rocky with some decent ledges. Not sure how it would be to spectate/photo from but might result in some cool stuff for sure.

From past that canyon to mile 25ish there's some good whoops and stuff up there but access in and out of there on race day will be a major pain. Actually now that I think about it, access to that mile 12 spot might end up getting you stuck there all day and I'd probably want to move around a bit as that's not really a good "all day" type spot.

The spot in the 2nd picture above has NEVER been a disappointment! No matter how virgin or beat up the courses have been it's always been a great whoops section over the years and the TT's will be running 100mph+, especially since they'll be going down hill opposite of what's in the 2nd picture above. If you have the generic line drawn map from BITD it's basically the almost vertical section of trail at roughly course mile 27.

Assuming this link below works, compare the two maps, you'll see they come thru the canyon heading east to west and then turn south wrapping around the base of that mountain. Zoom in and you can visually see the whoops!

Miles 30-35 might be rough but access in and out probably wouldn't make it worth it.

45-52ish is similar, rough but probably not worth it.

miles 60-70 will be absolutely a blast and awesome in the race vehicles!!!! Super scenic! Fast flowing lots of bermed high speed turns, tight canyons, etc... Nothing really exciting though spectator wise other then some cool berm shots.

The couple longer straight sections from about 72-77ish will be absolutely WIDE open with a couple BIG jumps out there. It's mostly flat, in our truck we were able to pin it pretty much wide open only checking up for a couple big jumps to be safe. The TT guys probably won't lift and should fly off a few spots. Finding them though would take some recon efforts for sure.

From about mile 85 till they make that hard right at the rail road tracks. It's SOFT and was about knee deep whoops. Would probably make for some great flying dirt shots combo'd with whoops.

90-95 isn't much for spectating but a blast in the vehicles, all really fast, flowing, smooth.

95-start/finish is good pretty much anywhere!

So... With that said, if I had media pass with access to the course I would personally plan my day to focus on the area just past spectator 1, park as far in as they'll let you and then hike in probably 5-10 minutes at most past where they limit the spectators. Basically... See how they have it kind of cleared out and then the clearing just abruptly stops, hike out a 1/2 mile or so past that and you won't be disappointed!

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=las+...91504&t=h&hnear=Las+Vegas,+Clark,+Nevada&z=16

I'd maybe catch them there off the start. From there time wise it would be a toss up, you're probably not going to beat them to mile 27 but for sure can beat them to the mile 95-start/finish. Catch them there for a bit and then head over and find a spot along the fence line around mile 27.

That would be my game plan personally. There's other good spots but you might end up trapped in them once the race starts and I like to be able to move if the spot ends up being a bust.

BTW, that's the area I go play with my prerunner in, I take the race truck testing in and we do our dirt bike night races. That's why I know that whole area pretty darn well! We're not racing the mint this year but if things work out we'll possibly be on the starting line next year with the truck above!

...Cool and thanks a bunch as this info will help us and other members who may be going...

..We hope to meet up with other members in the area if we can and after the race we will be in the desert between Barstow and Bullhead City for a few days...

....your post with all the info got me laughing as I know Brian1 is somewhere in New Mexico scrambling to get to a computer a gps a and a map to set coordinates ...:D

LOL, I cheat and just head out there and drive right to where I want to go cause I know the area well enough.

Be careful out there on race day even with a media pass. BLM doesn't screw around with handing out the fines. At our race back in late Jan they were HEAVILY enforcing all speed limits too. We didn't go anywhere race day without seeing multiple people pulled over and heard about a ticket for going 3 over on a 25mph posted zone! Honestly, the speed limit was part of what kept us from making the finish line! We had an 8 hour time limit and finished in 8:07. We waited for parts that our crew could've easily knocked 20-30 minutes drive time off if they'd just driven within reason rather then having to do 25 on empty dirt roads in the middle of nowhere!

I dont know if I will get a media pass or not. If I can register on site maybe but I was just planning on hanging out at Spectator 4. The quarry looks cool but it might be a giant dust bowl too. I was out on the Jean lakebed and a few of the access roads back in November but that has been the only time I have been in that area where the course is.

Looks like an easy spot to get to. Might have to check that one out. I do have the course overlayed on a satellite image using Google Earth.

Nice looking truck! My friends here are in a similar situation. They went last year and were planning to race this year but they just bought a new sportsman truck so they are going to watch again this year. They hope to race it next year.

Nah, I'm getting burned out on all the virtual prerunning, I'm just ready for the real thing!

I have heard that too. Seems excessive. I have not had a problem with the BLM covering races in northern Nevada and KOH in Southern CA but I have never done a BITD race or any in the Vegas area.

Thanks for the info!

Spectator area 4 will for sure be packed but it's a cool area! You're about 50 yards off the course and it's impressive to see how fast and smooth those guys go thru that stuff. They honestly don't do the roughness of that terrain justice to be honest

It's me and a partner with the race truck, he's the owner/financing, I'm the sweat/labor/cussing/builder all free of charge in exchange for drive time. Our catch, we raced our first race back in late Jan with the truck and he literally got orders that weekend that the good ole air force is sending him to europe for 3 years so our whole program just got put on hold. We're hoping he can make one stateside vacation per year around a race weekend and I might race it myself once or twice a year too. Bummer but what can you do...

More replies above in the text in blue... But in regards to the BLM, my only first hand run in with them was with a true media guy (durka durka media) who got pulled over at a BITD race out there a few years back and ticketed eventhough BITD told media they had full access. He took it to court and got it dropped but still a pain. On our race in Jan, getting from pit to pit was insanely SLOW cause of the speed limits. You couldn't drive more then a few minutes without seeing someone pulled over by rangers or cops. They collected some cash that day for sure out there!

..The Media does have to pay a BLM Fee of $25-$40 each person and go to a number of safety meetings, then the Media vehicles will have a distinguishing item describing the vehicle as Media per each race...

..This particular race has become one of the more difficult races to participate in as Media let alone if BLM is looking to have a ticket party on the Media..:thumbdwn:

..This race for Media requirements has little info and what info they have for us has been contradictory so we can only find out at the safety meeting Friday night o4r possibly at check in on Friday..:dunno:

...I'm with Brian as after we get there I may decide it's to much trouble and do my shooting from Spectator areas...

..I bet spec 4 is going to be freaking packed being right off jean and easy access from the highway..It will probably have it's own dust bowl from the crowd unless the big "W" is happening..

sirhk100, you should try to meet up with us Friday eve...

..Tomorrow I will start tinkering on the truck to make the trip...

I spectated the Mint 2 years ago and it wasn't too bad but there also were no good legit spectating areas. I heard last year where spec 4 is this year was an absolute mad house with the whole area full of vehicles all the way to the pavement on knight ranch road and people parking down the pavement. I'd venture to guess this year will be a bit lighter cause they've opened up the gravel pit and that spec 1 area also which might thin the heard a bit. Being Vegas though, I'd still bet that Spec 4 will be the most crowded out of the 4 available.

Not sure your plans on Friday evening but you're more then welcome to cruise by my house. I might make it down to freemont street for a little bit on Friday afternoon to meet up with some family friends that will be down there but other then that I planned on most likely working on the exploder in my garage. I'm hoping to have rear bypass shocks mounted tomorrow night and have the rear sitting back on the ground by thurs night and maybe even start figuring out how to mount the rear fiberglass. This weekend I'd really like to start tearing into the front end.

My house is kind of one of those offroad vehicle hoarding spots... 2 dirt bikes, full blown race truck, fully caged prerunner, heavily built expo in process of being stripped of all it's parts to build up a new one, etc... LOL

Will kinda have to see how the week goes progress wise though. If I make good progress I'll try to get out for sure but seriously, if you guys wanted to cruise by here I'm about 10 minutes east of the strip or about 10 minutes southeast of freemont.

Khris
