I have been looking through this forum for a few days and I have tried all kinds of searches as well, but I just cannot figure out what this plug is. I apologize if the answer already exists on the forum. It is in the jack compartment on the driver side rear panel. I have included a few pictures of it. If anyone knows what this might be for I would really appreciate the help. Thank you!

This is a 2000 Explorer XLT

did u look to see if it might be to the door lock
do they work if u press it???

nope

nope not the door lock. I can see where that plug goes, plus the lock button works. Thanks though.

Do your rear windshield washer and wiper work? The only things back in that area are the washer bottle, the taillight harness and the 4wd computer.

this won't help much, but wonder if it's for some factory option that you don't have. Did'nt mean to hurt your feelings. Could be roughed-in for one and that's all.

Yeah, all those work fine. I noticed this back there and it had some kind of cap on it. The connector has some sort of locking mechanism that I assume is ment to hold the connector into whatever it goes to. I am wondering if there is any chance it is Audio related. I thought it might be some hook up that is used if i had a higher grade audio system (like to an amp or cd changer). Thanks for any help you can provide!

That would be on the other side.

i have a 2000 XLT and have that plug plugged into a balck box
i have pics but i cant figure out how to insert it since i am not elite

how can i post these pics?

I have also seen that plug. I have a 98 wiring harness from an ARC vehicle, the ARC system has a switch and relay back there. That's my guess, the air ride suspension.

Do you have keyless entry? Because that might be part of the wiring harness for the alarm system if you don't.

here is mine, I dont have air ride (I dont think??)...

even though i own a 92, the only thing i can think of is its the connector for the 4wd engagement computer. is your explorer 4x2 or 4x4? if its 4 wheel drive, i have no clue then :-)

My 99 Mounty Is missing its black Box and it has Prem. sound and keyless entry. Mine is also a 2wd V-8

Keyless entry is the white box further forward. Its not 4x4 stuff either.

I know that I do not have the box, but I don't remember seeing that connector either.

EDIT: looking over the Ford service manual it appears to be the parking aid module.

Jefe said what it was for

I tried that and got nothing.

I had to go through all the modules that I didn't know the location of on my 2000 Ford service manual to find it. Amazingly there were quite I few I didn't know.

Its the parking aid module AKA the backup sensors.
