Been a while since I have been on. My father just passed his 95 down to me and the intention is to see how long the truck will last. Currently has about 190,000 and drives great. A few years back he had the blinking O/D light and took it to the dealer who dropped the pan and explained he needed a tranny to which my dad had them just button it up. And here we are and it still drives fine.

I did a search and couldn't find any reasoning so I will bring it up; should I move up to a Merc 5 or just use the Merc/Dex for a fluid change? What are the reasons? I have never experienced a tranny problem and have owned now 5 Explorers and would like to keep it that way although I am not ignorant of the probabilities.

Jeff, I am fairly certain you need the Merc V, but check your owner's manual/dipstick, it should say. You can use Dex/Merc, but you have to add a bottle of Lubeguard MV, because Dex/Merc does not have the friction modifiers your transmission requires. I would just stick with the Merc V.
