I've got everything I need to do the adjustment on my 99.Explorer.
I just completed the Ford TSB VB upgrades and replaced the EPC to try and correct the 2-3 shift flare.
It seems to shift better but I still have a little flare. Anyway, I notice the DTR sensor looks like it might be in the way. When I go to adjust the intermediate band. If I remove the DTRS is there a way to adjust the DTRS without having the special tool?

Thanks

The end snaps onto a part which looks like a ball. The other side has a horse shoe shaped clip pressing against it.

Would you mind going into a bit more detail? I see that is snaps onto the ball socket but cannot get it off with appropriate force, and I was able to get the white horse shoe plastic clip out, which did nothing for me...

The shift cable/linkage, and sensor are obviously in the way of any kind of torque wrench (much less a regular 1/4 drive wrench). Maybe I'm retarded and everyone else got around this issue without frustration, but when I'm on my back in ~30 degree weather with 25 mph winds trying to make this work with incomplete instructions, it gets quite testing!

To add something to the thread:

Picture of the items in the way as well as the band adjustment bolts can be seen here:

And the band adjustment bolts on my 99 can be adjusted with a 3/8" 12 pt. socket.

4r44e band on 96 xlt 4.0

my 96 has been sitting for quite a while now. lost 2nd gear suddenly, rpms went up as I accelerated. Can force shift to 3rd with throttle. I scanned codes and as I recall, it indicated 2nd gear shift solenoid. Dropped it off at trans shop to be checked, the told me the pins that hold second gear band were in the pan, and that trans had to be pulled and disassembled to repair, so might as well rebuild it. Here is my question, if I pull the tranny, how much of a job is it to replace the band and probably the shift solenoid? Or, any suggestions? Thanks

thanks for the reply Brooklyn, not what I wanted to hear though. have you rebuilt one of these before? if so how big of a job is it? I rebuilt a c3 once, but that was about 30 yrs ago, not much recollection of it now. If there is a step by step manual on it I would imagine I could do it. I'm assuming that with a complete rebuild all the internal servos etc should be replaced as well as a clutch kit. so I'm going to take a guess at 300.00 or so in parts. should the torque converter be replaced too? has around 125,000 mi on it. engine completely rebuilt about 12,000 ago otherwise I would probably give up on it.

Replace the torque converter, and clean the front cooler before you install the rebuilt transmission. You don't want to add debris from the previous transmission into the new system. The transmission section has a thread on rebuilding the A4LD, and another thread on rebuilding the valve body.

Hey guys, please excuse me, but I want to be sure:

For my '96 4.0 V6 Explorer with a 4R55E transmission, the band adjustment procedure is as follows:

Loose the nut. Tighten the stud to 10 ft-lbs, turn 2 turns back (OD) and 2.5 (Intermediate). Tighten the nut to 35 ft-lbs.

By turn back you mean 360 degrees turn, right?
OD is the first band near the Engine?

Many thanks.

On the A4LD the OD for 90-92 is 3.5 turns back while other years or rebuilds are 2 turns back. Is there any way to tell if I have the original transmission in my 91 or not? If I turn it out 3.5 when it needs 2 would it just fail to engage?

Which situation would cause more damage, turning it out 3.5 turns if it takes 2 turns, or vice versa?

Well I adjusted both bands and 2nd feels fine, but I still slip ("shudder") under mild pedal in 4th gear. Fluid problem or clogged filter?

By the way, I must have been lucky or something, but the shift cable just clips into the bracket on a 91 so I didn't have to do anything to get it out the way but pop it out.

The cover indicates the size of the servo with a 2 letter code. You could purchase new servos, and servo cover O rings from WWW.TransmissionPartsUSA.Com. Replace one at a time to avoid confusion. Each servo is a different size, and uses a different spring. Both covers use the same O ring size.

Looks like the cat is completely in the way of me even seeing what servos I have, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

Hey BB. Found a contradiction; On 5R55E trans, beginning of post shows both bands as 2.0 turns back after snug (10 ft/lbs), but on Transgo general reference detail from your link list; says back off 1 1/2 turns. whats the difference in feel between too tight and too loose ? The old corrosion covered studs and bolts are a pain to get workin freely again, so I'm not sure if I have in all the way for snug or not. Thanks man !! Oh btw. I have 2-3 (3-4) flare, as well as slow to engage reverse. Just replaced all solenoids - no dice - now doing bands. I'm sure VB replace/rebuild will be next :(
