My 97 needs a new t-case. Brought it into a local shop, and his junkyard guy wants $800 for a used case with 50k on it. Short warranty on it. Can I do a lot better than this? Total is going to come to $1,100. I need to call him back tomorrow and let him know if I want the case or not. Any help appreciated.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!

I've been buying and selling 4405s, 4404s, and 1354s for $80-$150.

Run.

Wtf???

Section, what do I need, a 4405?

i just bought one for my 98 and it doesn't fit if it fits your truck 100 bucks i will sell it to you i am located in doylestown pa

What model?

Yeah, if you have the auto shifting case its a 4405.

Thanks man....I feel like an ass now for even considering the $800. How could it be so completely off the mark?

I'll sell you one for $500. :D

97 is unique because of two things:

1. 97 uses a CV joint on the front output, 95 & 96 had a u-joint I believe. I haven't seen it for myself, but it was reported that way from others.

2. 97 has the VSS mounted on the TC. 98+ switched to mount the VSS/ABS sensor at the rear diff. Some people have run into this issue trying to swap a newer 4405 in.

Just a heads up.

SO because of these issues I basically need one specifically from a 97?

Are you 100% sure you even need a new case, or are you just going off what the mechanic said?
It's WAY more common for the shift motor to go bad, vs the T-case it self...

If you just want to bolt it in, yes. I believe that some people have been able to get a 98+ TC to work by using the rear case from the 97 and the drive gear for the VSS on the output shaft. Glacier took one of these apart and wrote it up. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182071

Izwack has worked on the 4405 too, so he might be able to help. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142207&highlight=girlie+man

My TC case is still working fine, but I have been following some of these threads just in case.

I'm fairly certain the t-case is busted. It happened offroading with FireZapper last fall. It's basically making horrible popping whenever 4wd is engaged and feels like it's "slipping". When it snowed last winter and i was driving around in 4wd, it sounded like a bag of popcorn it was so bad. It actually even occurs sometimes when I'm not in 4wd and am really punching the gas from a stop. Sounds like the case, no?

Yeah, I guess so then. I've just never had or heard a busted Tcase. ;)
When you find a replacement, think about putting it in yourself and save the money. It's not that hard, cuz I managed to do it!

I'd be scared to death to attempt something like that...I've done a ton of work on my truck, but nothing involving the driveline or anything like that....i'd love to save the money, but I don't know.

OK, so I've got a buddy who tears apart Broncos in his spare time who is going to help me tackle this project Monday.

What am I going to need? I figure the new Mercon ATF fluid, ample tools, jacks, etc. What else? I searched but couldn't find any how-to or picture threads on just swapping the case (plently of rebuilds though, haha). Any info/help appreciated.

Oh you can do this. Its just a replacment job.

If you find one online you can get it shipped for about 75 bucks.

Removing the console might make the top bolts a bit easier to get to. After unplugging the connectors, it is pretty much a straight forward removal and replacement. Once you get to all the bolts you will be amazed how easy it is.
It will be very heavy and awkward. You'll need to be able to get under it and bench press it up into position. Take note of how you let it down, because that is how it will go back up. As silly as it sounds, the higher you can get the truck up on stands the better, as this makes it easier to get under the case, while under the truck.
