So I am just wondering which six I have OHV or ?

is it the 3.0 or 4.0?
it is most likely the over head valve (ohv)

you more then likely have a ohv v6. look at your VIN, if it has a "X" in it, its a ohv, if you have a "E" then it would have a SOHC

Thanks guys I will have a look at my vin tonight. Is there a post saying the differences in the two engines?

Does the engine look like this? (4.0 OHV)

Or like this? (4.0 SOHC) It also says SOHC 4.0L on the top.

And explorers never came with a 3.0.

the ohv is bullet proof. they are very reliable motors, but not as much power as the SOHC. the sohc has timing chain issues, and loooove to eat gas. there are some members here (corkey comes to mind) that have close to 400,000kms on them. my 91 ranger has about 370,000kms on it. a sohc (which is what my explorer has) would doubtfully live that long.

Looking at the two - argh now I can't remember which one it is - I think it is the one below but I will have to look again (it is at home) to be sure. I get great gas mileage (best mileage I have had on any explorer) and not too powerful (in my mind) but it get 20 percent better mileage than my 2007 Jeep 6cyl Grand Cherokee. (at least)

If it is not a V8, it has to be a 4.0L OHV if it's a 1996, the SOHC didn't come out for another year yet...

So I have the bulletproof one.. Yay!
I do know that it sounds like it is brand new when I listen to it. Does not have that annoying 'tick' that I had in a couple first gens.

I have two xx in my VIN but no E. Confirmed OHV.
I hated that stupid tick. Tick. Tick.. Etc
I did lower the volume with that Lucas oil on my first gen when i had it. It did work between oil changes. .5 liter added to the oil chg
