Hey everyone. I have a 99 Explorer Sport V6 pushrod with two cracked heads. I am looking to get a new engine and I have a friend that can put it in, however it is a pushrod V6 from a first gen Explorer.

My 'sploder comes with the 5 speed manual transmission. Do any of you know if the engine coming out of the first gen will work in my second gen? I want this to work because the engine has low mileage (for a 1992) and he is giving me an amazing price on it. Also, if it will work, will I be able to use my intake manifolds on the older engine?

I trust this mechanic and he is a good friend, but neither of us are sure if this will work or not.

the motor from the 1st gen and the 2nd gens are both 4.0L V6's so i would think its very possible without much weird stuff involved. i think people have put 5.0L motors in 1st gen explorers too. just research it on the forum, im sure it wont be too hard to find.

Well I've searched all over this forum and I have found plenty about 5.0 conversions and pushrod to sohc conversions (and vise-versa) but nothing about cross-generation engine swaps. I guess we'll just have to try it out and see if it fits. I'll let you guys know.

good luck, i would look into the search function again, im pretty sure ive read threads on this before. try searching "motor swap", or "engine replacement". good luck!

You may need to swap the accesories. The short block should be a direct swap.

It wont be completely legal, but no one but you will know.

"Swap accessories"??? Like take the older ones from the older truck and put them in my newer truck or you mean just leave mine in there? I'm assuming the first one I mentioned, just want to make sure I know what to look out for. Doing some more searching now....

Thank you for the replies so far guys. Very helpful.

Don't mean to be negative here, but recommend swaping only exact match engines. Same year, same engine, hooked to the same trans. Whatever you save on some freebie eng you may loose with various incompatibilities. Just dropped a 98x into a 2000 and discovered the differences the hard way.

Legal engine swaps are same year or newer, same or similar models. the recieving vehicle needs to have come stock with with the same engine type you are swaping, federal law.

Some additional VIN and computer issues may be relevent. Gen I and II explorers dont have a sofisticed enough computer to know the difference. Some states have safety inspections. Check engine lights wont pass safety inspection.

Thanks, didnt know that. I thought you could basicaly do what you wanted as long as it passed inspection and emissions were required.

your engine has a different crankshaft that the 1st gen engine, as i found out while doing a 5spd conversion, and i would reccomend staying with the 97 1/2 and newer engine, as there are several other differences. I have been told that the motor mounts changed too, but i dont know if that is true
