I have a 1999 Explorer XLT 4WD 4.0 V6 SOHC, it has about 170K miles, I get 15 MPG around town and as high as 21 when driving on trips to Vegas and Denver.
I had a 1995 Sport, 2wd with a 5 speed manual, 4.0L OHV engine. No problem getting about 25mpg on the highway. I now have a 2001 Sport with the 4.0L SOHC engine, 4wd and an automatic. Got it with super low mileage and in awesome condition. loaded with options. I love it but it's a pig on gas, barely 20mpg on the highway, 12-15 around town. My son has a 2002 Sport 2wd with a 5-speed and the SOHC engine. It's not only much quicker than my 2001 but gets way better mileage. I get that the 4wd on my 2001 will drain some mpg, but the 5R55E transmission is a power-robbing slushbox. I'm looking into doing a manual conversion as I prefer manuals anyway.
1994 EB 4x4 auto, got it at 136k a year ago. At that time it was getting 15-17 mpg with mixed city/highway driving. It started having trouble shifting a month or so into owning it so I had the transmission rebuilt. Now it shifts and drives like new but my mpg is horrible, around 11-12 even after an oil change, air filter change, new fuel pump and sending unit (mine was the original and was dying), and re-packing the front wheel bearings when I switched from auto to manual hubs. It’s at 140k now. I’m tempted to change the plugs and fuel filter even though I can tell they were changed not long before I bought it. It’s running on Cooper Discoverer 30s on 15” alloy wheels.
Cheater, using premium gains some fuel mileage. I've tried some over the years, it helps but not enough for the cost. I plan to build a 306, and for the cost of gas, I'm aiming for a compression that will let it run on regular, about 9.6:1 I think can be done. Sorry, for boost you have no choice.
I have a 96 AWD 5.0 with 270500 miles on it slightly modded on 31X10.50X15s With 2in lift and get about 13.5-14-5 city and on up to 17-20mpg on nice open hiway. Best it ever did was on a trip from siminol Oklahoma down to Galveston Tx i was able to get ethanol free gas in Ok and with the weather no ac or fan ect needed and was able to get 22mpg as i ran the whole tank from full to empty non stop.
