what kind of mileage do you all get ??

1996 with under 100k? Lucky...lol...
I have a 1996 with 100k that I just bought, and am ironing the kinks out now. OHV/auto, 3.55:1. The muffler was rotten so I replaced it with a straight pipe. K&N filter, 5w-40 synthetic oil and all synthetic fluids, but other than that, it is stock. I have gotten about 240 to a full tank, but it is cold here so I give the truck generous warmup time when starting from cold, so this depresses the gas mileage figure.
The K&N fiter and removal of the muffler makes a noticeable difference in both power and mileage.
I also have a 1997 Sport with a 5-speed, 3 inches lift/31's, and it gets 22 avg. OHV, 3.73. Stock muff, K&N filter. 390k mi.
Finally I have a 1995 sport, 4.5 inch lift, 33's, OHV, auto, 3.55. This gets around 12 mpg, but it was usually in the woods, rarely sees pavement. Also muff delete and K&N, also noticeable difference. 180k mi.

hello, i have a 1996 Explorer with the 4.0L V6 engine, with automatic transmission, and 68,249 mikes on her. it runs great and I love my Explorer. I get about 259 miles on a tank of gas, and was just wondering what kind of Milage other folks are getting so I know if mine is doing good or not. so lets hear them...tell us your milage espicially if you also have the 4.0L OHC enging and automatic transmission.
thanks

Original owner of 1999 Explorer Limited. Onboard computer shows 18.2 MPG for all around driving. I may go several thousand miles before resetting computer but it always returns to the same average MPG. The car/truck has no mods, bone stock with 180,000 miles now. 4.0 Engine

I have a 96 4.0L V6 w/ 248,000 miles and get about 14 mpg in town and 18-20 on highway. Don’t do a lot of hwy but when I do, I check the mileage. Kinda geeky like that!

That's about right. I don't drive an Explorer for the mileage....I drive one because they rock!

Possibly not as relevant as you'd like, but my 2003 4.6 litre Explorer with 220000km on the clock does 17MPG (18 litres / 100km) on average. It's similar to the mileage I used to get from my 1997 3.5 litre Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero)

'97 four door with 4.0 SOHC, 5R55E, 2WD, 3.73 rear, stock 15 inch wheels with Goodyear Wrangler tires: I've been able to just barely break 20 on all-highway trips, but usually averaged 17.5 mpg for combined city/highway driving. That was back when I still had 2nd and 5th gear though -- now I can't break 14 mpg!

2000 sport 4.0 2WD OHV manual (35,000 to 208,000 miles) = 17 city, 21 highway.
2000 XLS 4.0 4WD OHV auto (71,000 to current 77,000 miles) = 17 city, 21 highway.
1998 XLT 4.0 4WD OHV auto (105,000 to current 110,000 miles) = 17 city, 21 highway.

I also have a 2000 XLS 4.0 4WD OHV auto (145,000 to current 180,000 miles) = 17 city, 21 highway. This has an oil leak (about a quart every month) in the rear main seal that I'd have to remove the trans to fix. I just keep an eye on the oil level and add instead of fixing. Good news is no rust will ever grow.

I don't know the size of the tanks, but I normally get about 295 to 310 miles per tank (when the light comes on. I'm sure I can get another 10-15 miles more).

Hello, I have a 93 Explorer with the same set-up and I get the same amount of mileage out of mine. Usually, I get around 15.8 mpg.

Where these rust, a leaking seal isn’t going to help.

Sounds really low to me. I have a 2008 with 120K milers and I get 17.3 consistently around town and freeway combined. More freeway driving I get 18.3. On long road trips I can get up to a max of just under or close to 20.0 mpg. This is of course without stopping for anything. I added a K&N air filter and a performance muffler that helped only a little from 16.8 to the 17.3 range. No undercarriage room for a Flowmaster and dual exhausts like my 2000 Ranger which made a HUGE improvement in power, mileage and sound. I get about 320 +/- miles per tank.

260 low end - 400 high end - avg 295-310

On a good day (summer, no AC, windows cracked, flat road, cruising) I can get 24. Dead of winter, I struggle to get 14. I drive it like it's a hybrid - I like to Hyper-Mile, so other's experience may be of more value.

2001 4.0 SOHC auto 4x4 260k miles. I can get 19-20 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. Which I think is pretty good for an older explorer.

I have a 98 explorer, sohc, and has under 20k miles (yes original) and I got about 15 mpg , averaging 75 mph highway. That was before I went to a km washable air filter, suspect it's slightly higher now..
Ok, but your truck is not even broke in yet!

When I hadmy 98 5.0 and 12 to 16 mph. My 2015 by was 17 in town and on a long trip at 80mph 20. At 65 23mpg. My 2020 4cyl EcoBoost 19 to 20 in town and 27 on the highway. I do want to try the same trip at 80 to compare just haven't done it yet

Mine is a 1999 Sport 4.0 OHV 2WD and I live in coastal GA where it's all flat.
A few years ago, when first moved here and lived downtown for a little while, I used to get 14.9 Mpg. Now out here on the Islands I get around 16.7 Mpg. On longer trips all on the Highway it's 19 to 20 Mpg. When parking at a mall in the heat with the AC running I get 0 Mpg.
I have a 99 sport ohv v6 310,000 mi. and
It gets 14 to 15 in town

I have a 1993 Explorer, two wheel drive Eddie Bauer with the 4.0L V6 engine and automatic transmission. Bought it in 2015 with about 65,000 miles on it. It was a bit rocky for the first year or two and I ended up replacing the transmission oil and filter, flushed and replace oil in the rear differential, replaced fuel injectors, computer and O2 sensors. Prior to that I was also getting about 14 mpg. Once the engine relearned its trim I now can get close to 24 mpg on a 380 mile trip I make routinely. If I am pulling a trailer and running without overdrive I get 14-15 mpg. The overdrive drops the tachometer from about 2500 to 2000 rpm at 65 mph. She just rolled the odometer over and now has 02643 showing. Keeping your speed down and driving conservatively make a significant difference in a vehicle that shows 85 mph as the top of the speedometer!! She's now my daily drive and farm feed hauler.

Hello
We have a 2000 Exploror with a 4.0 OHC Eng & 5 spd, manual transmission that we bought new.It has 161k miles on it .We can go 340+ miles on a tank of gas. That is the diff between an automatic and a straight drive, average 24 mpg. We use to get 26-28 Mpg on a trip.

Mine is a 92. In the winter, when I warm it up and such, I'm around 11 or so mpg. I can get about 14 tops around the city when the weather is warmer, with maybe a little of freeway miles. My odometer has about 74k, I've had it for about 10 years, and have no idea if it's 74, 174, or 274 on the 4.0 engine with auto trans. Best I've done on mileage was an out of state trip when I first got it, and I got about 18. It mostly stays in the city these days. Hope this helps.
