My problems with this thing led me to this site. mine went @120k. symptoms: no t/c lock-up, everything else was fine. rebuilder found parts of plant. gears had decided to relocate to the valve body. cost for pro rebuild in sw oregon: 1800>2200

Mine went about 3, or 5 times, so I can't give specific dates, or mileage. The last time was almost 4 years ago when I was about 85 miles away from home. It was extremely expensive to get a tow truck on a Sunday night to get towed so far. The front pump gears exploded, and clogged just about every part of the transmission. Every crevice that I was able to get into had metal shavings. When I put it back together, it still didn't work properly. The valve body probably had a lot more fragments that didn't get cleaned out thoroughly. I have 2 more vehicles besides this one, so I didn't get around to working on it again. This is going to be another A4LD project for me when it gets a little warmer, and I have time. I'm in the process of gathering some valve body parts to do a VB rebuild. I want to add all of the upgrades to it.

199,000miles and still going.

mine went out about 120k vehicle miles.... the previous owner had it rebuilt at 80k vehicle miles

so the tranny only had 40k miles on it....

anyways I was making the drive to schooll after winter break from Bakersfield CA to Lubbock TX
40 miles outside of flagstaff arizona i'm cruising up a hill and all of a sudden my engine is red lining and i'm coasting to a stop... so i kill the cruise control, hit the e blinkers and coast to the shoulder... so I stop, set the E brake get out... visually look at everything, check the tranny fluid... looks fine... get back in restart put it in gear... makes funny crunchy sound and still acts like neutral... every gear except park acted like neutral... even reverse

i call my dad and have him look up transmission shops in the area and ended up going to an aamco... they towed the whole way to flagstaff for free... and they had a rebuilt transmission on hand...

so 28 hours and $1300 later i was back on the road...

it was the longest that trip has ever taken me... i usually do it in about 17.5 hours... including my stops... which are only for gas...

In this case the first thing to check is the torque converter THAT WILL CSUSE THIS and is a hell of alot cheaper.
torque converters will also cause shuttering on accellereation and slipping
usually you will hear a loud bang and possibly a sudden jerk in the vehicle then the engine will rev up and no gears at all.

My father bought the truck new in 94 and the first tranny went at 30k and was done under waranty, the second at 41k again under waranty from last rebuild, third went at 65 k that was out of pocket and died coming down the ramp at the dealer, the 4th went at 96k and again was out of pocket and the 5th went at 136k and had replaced EVERYTHING including lines, cooler, no longer running it through the radiator cooler, and had a shift kit and heavy duty parts (bands and clutches i think)put in and has been great so far but im keeping my fingers crossed.

my a4ld has been kicking for 274 000KM , its actually still the original tranny from 1991......startin to wunder when its going to go.

194,000 and going on the '93, for now.

first one last till 180k i think, second one lasted 4 months, on my third but i fell it goin after 2 months, so i am gonna swap in a v8 and c5 soon, i am tired of replacing the damn things

88K miles
Only got 79K out of the 5 speed.

I'm hard on cars.

I got roughly 52,000 miles out of my first one and then I had the ford dealership install a new one and its been great and im going on 123,000 miles now...I was hauling two 4wheelers on my way to Kentucky.. I was 150 miles away from home when mine went out.

Mine died at 155k. It felt like I popped it in neutral as I was accelerating from a stop. It didnt completely go tho. I found that if I revved it out to 4500-5000 rpm I was able to move it off the road. I ended up replacing it with one that had been rebuilt and had aprox 20k on it already. Guy told me there wasnt anything wrong with it he just wanted to upgrade to a C6 so he could tow with peace of mind. I've been happy with it since, but Ive only got 2k on it since the swap. If it breaks I may do the C6 idea cause Im thinking about swapping the 4.0 to 5.0.

192K and still had the original fluid. It was beat mercilessly for the last 112k miles of its life!

311,000 miles and still going strong.

161,000 and still going.
