1998 Ranger 4x4 3.0. Fuel gauge reads off scale full. Going to troubleshoot it properly this weekend and it could be a wiring problem but if the sending unit is bad where can I get one? Doesn't look like anyone sells one. Is that a dealer only item?

Sender is part of the fuel pump assembly, don't think I've ever seen one available separately.

Ok thanks! Autozone is super expensive compared to that one on amazon.

Hold up. I hope you didn't order yet. I read your vehicle info from your profile, not the first line of your post! Sorry about that. The pump shown was for the 2000!

Yeah I caught that. Mine is the 2000 explorer. This is for my son's 1998 ranger.

Beware-the airtex pumps are hit and miss. some fail right after replacing, as it happened while working on my 2004 ranger. It worked for about 2 starts.

Thanks for the warning. I'm hoping the problem is found in the wiring instead of the actual sending unit.

Depending on the mileage, you might be better off just replacing the fuel pump/sending unit assembly anyway.

I used the Spectra pump assembly in my explorer 6 months ago. I was dubious about it, since they have some sketchy policies (no warranty unless it's installed by a shop...wtf? pretty sure that won't hold up in court). But it was cheap, available, and a perfect copy of the Motorcraft assembly. No wiring, no bending the float to match the old one...just drop in and bolt.

Still working fine.
