4.6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have the v8 in my mounty and my mom has the v6 in her ex... both with around 130,000 miles.. the v8 just seams more solid and reliable. it starts up right away as if it was new. the v6 has to turn over for a few extra seconds.. idk, it could b that it just needs plugs. but i would definatly stick with the v8.
and for the power gain u get with the v8, u can over look the loss of gas milage. imo
I can't speak on the 4.0L engines, but between the 4.6 and the 5.0 the 5.0 is the clear winner in regards to reliability. I don't think i've ever seen a 4.6 with over 150k miles that didn't burn oil from bad valve seals. Thats not even really a big deal either, but my 5.0 has over 200k on it and doesn't burn a drop.
I think if the 4.0L SOHC didn't have the Chain Tensioner problems, it would be a lot more popular of an engine and get good ratings on here. Other than the chain tensioner issue the engine isn't that bad.

I have to agree with you on that, there is a lot of potential in that motor, we've seen what some guys have gotten out of it. The timing chain issue just kills it for me though. That and the transmission isn't the greatest, especially in the earlier models.
