I am wondering if anyone has had my same or similar issues with my '13 Explorer. During acceleration around 30-40 mph the engine has like a whining noise as well as a rattling noise. I took it to two different Ford service centers and they could not find the problem. During a test drive with the mechanic i was able to reproduce the issue. All they told me was that they found nothing wrong with the safety of the vehicle and suggested I get a second opinion. It sounds to me like they either do not want to fix the problem or do not want to take the time to discover the problem.

Did they check for a loose heat shield?

I do not know. They just told me that they checked all the safety items and those are all ok. I am bringing it back and I will mention it to them. Is there a way I can check myself or is it something only a mechanic can check for?

I am not sure if this helps but the sound seems to be coming from the left engine compartment or somewhere on the driver's side

Welcome to the forum, rjemttomd. I'd like to look into this further and research ways to help. How many miles are on your Explorer?

Crystal, are you still monitoring this thread? I have exactly the same situation in my 2013 2.0 FWD Limited Explorer. I have a whistling noise that turns into a rattle. This only happens under load (acceleration) and the whistle or whine seems to be coming from the right side of the engine compartment (turbo?) whilst, the rattle then comes from (seemingly) the left side of the engine compartment. I can't get a dealer to look at it because they are all backed up and the mechanics that looked at it could not find anything loose. Engine performance is nominal but I have noticed a degradation of fuel economy. I track this and can verify that instead of 22mg combined, now I get about 16-18mpg combined. I am a conservative driver, never abusive.
Of note:
Dealer has performed about 95% of any work
Regular Oil Changes
Turbo failed at around 93K miles, replaced under warranty
Transmission failed around 130K miles. Rebuilt.
Current milage around 149K Miles.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
I expect to get a video or audio recording to help explain this problem.

The Ford reps have not been here or on any forums for several years now.
