I know there are quite a few people who have done that conversion. If you do a search on the V8 swap you should be able to find what you're looking for.

4.0 to 5.0 Conversion

The price will vary with the quality of the conversion kit you use and the motor you buy.

A low milage motor will cost less than a crate motor or a performance rebuilt. L&L Conversion Kit will cost more than Advanced Adapters because it is the best and highest quality money can buy.

If you use the stock radiator vs a special you can save money, but will it cool the vehicle on a hot trail.

So how far do YOU want to go, that is the question.

My Ranger conversion cost around $3000.00, so far my Navajo Project has reached over $9000.00. How much money did you say you have ?

Good Luck, figure out how far you really need to go and do it.

yes, i'm highly considering swaping to a v-8 when my tranny blows, is this an option to do on a 96 xlt since it already is sized and came with the v-8 as an option?

96 Conversion

I am not all that familiar with the newer versions of the Explorer, I do know that the Mountaineer version came with a V8 and the parts should work. All of the part needed can be purchased from Ford and available for replacement as needed. Maybe find a wreched Mountaineer and get all of the parts at once along with the engine and all of the front pulleys and brackets, they fit closer than the Stang versions of the 5.0.

When doing the swap look at the weight of the engines, how much more or less than the stock engine is the replacement. If too much difference in weight and if you intend to add heavier bumper, winch, etc, look into either stock height springs with a higher spring rate or a lift to compensate for the extra weight. Of course if the weight is less than stock then leave well enough alone, unless you want a lift.

Good Luck, sounds like you know where you want to go, now go there...
