Okay.. excuse the wood. :p: But I think I want the winch plate mounted to the top of the frame rails. Which would put it about right here. It will probably be bolted to the rails and the crossmember I added for the axle swap. Should be good and stout. But.. is it me or does that thing seem to stick waaaaaay out? Only other option would be to hack out the grille...

Also, what should I do for the "bumper" aspect of it. I want to keep it very simple. Tube.

That's how I tried it at first. I thought it was pretty low that way. But it doesn't look all that bad.

Go IZ style and get rid of the grill all together!! :p:

It doesn't seem too bad at the bottom of the frame like that. For the bumper, I say make a bolt on like IZ did. That's my plan.

You two need to have a winch-mount building party next weekend.

But yes, if you want to sink that winch as far back as possible, you either have to remove the grill or cut part of it out -- along with part of the body thats under the grill (its plastic so its cake). Oh and you also might need to move the aux transmission cooler up.

But while you build that, dont forget:

They see me mowin'
My front lawn
Patrolling they see I'm so white and nerdy
Juest because I'm white and nerdy
Can't you see I'm white and nerdy

and so on and so forth .. yada yada yada.

And since you two have the same winch, you can just build two of everything.

IZ, check out this glorious piece of metal.

Hahaha.. I know.. but the winch was a wedding present. And it's been over a year since I got it. :(

That looks pretty good

Thanks. What Explorer do you have?

You still working on that hunkajunk?;)

I pretty much just decided to hack off my front end and do it over again lol. Finally ordered a bender and bought a chopsaw last week tho. Someday I will get to fab again. Shootin for Thanksgiving fab extravaganza:D

If you are mounting it out that far I would put it on a reciever so you can take it out, but I hate those reciever mounts. I voter between the frame rails, under the apron. That is the best for approach angle and keeping it low. Here is how mine came out- I mounted it with two big pieces of angle on the sides like 4x4 or something and put the winch plate between. If you mount it out in front of the grille like that you will be smacking it into everything. I am still going to add some tube to mine one of these days to protect the corners.

I guess I didn't post my latest mock-up pics. Maybe froader can if he has them. It's going to be similar to yours. Not quite as far back because of my crossmember. But it'll be as far back as I can get it. Right between the frame rails. I already extended the frame out about 4" to fit that plate snuggly in there. It'll be bulletproof. :D

Sweet! post up! I want to see what you do with tubing as I haven't quite decided what I am doing with mine yet.

Here's the basics. The frame rails are going to be capped and have shackle mounts on them.

I'm trimming a little bit of the grille from underneath to get it up as high as possible. But thats absolutely as far back as it'll go.

Hey thanks for keeping me on your frame rail :)

And about those rails, oh yeah, they're huge. Its like a mastodon crossed with a rusty mastiff -- beef.
